[Massively] Marvel Universe F2P!!!!

Move over, Batman: After a few false starts, Marvel's finally poised to become the next big MMO superhero thing.

Thursday evening, I attended Gazillion Entertainment and Marvel's live San Francisco reveal of Marvel Universe Online's head writer, the jovial Brian Michael Bendis. Joining Brian for a lively Q&A panel were Gazillion President and COO David Brevik, VP and Studio Head for Secret Identity (fka Gargantuan) Jeff Lind, and VP of Games at Marvel TQ Jefferson. Brian's involvement in the game's story wasn't the only announcement the panelists had in store for attendees -- they almost casually confessed that players will slip into the spandex of iconic Marvel characters and that the game will be free-to-play, making it perhaps the first Western triple-A title to be designed for such a model from the ground up.
Quote:
The game will be free-to-play, designed F2P from the ground up. David Brevik noted that he hates being "nickel-and-dimed" by the sorts of F2P MMOs that are really just five-minute demos to get you to pony up for the rest of the game. The team isn't ready to talk about the kinds of microtransaction content that will fund the game, but we were assured that it will nevertheless by playably F2P.
Quote:
It'll definitely be a PC game; other platforms are yet to be announced.
Hopefully it'll be a great game. But more importantly I hope this adds pressure to other big MMORPG's to offer a F2P... especially SWTOR

All I can say is item shop.

Most MMO that are f2p have them. They make more money off an item shop then they do charging monthly for the game.

But hopefully it will be a better game then DC universe.

I just hope that the free2play craze doesn't end up making free-2play games more expensive to play then an old fashioned subscription game. Fill the item shops with social items and non-play affecting items and it is fine. However, I've been witnessing some games actually charging to unlock classes and abilities or having gear that can only only be bought being better than gear that can be found in game.

Every MMO that I've played that turned free2play ended up with me quiting it because it turned into garbage fast. I can't see why people like this item shop model so much. Hell, look at all those stupid facebook games. I've tried to play a few of them, but then I look around and it obvious that people are dumping a lot of money into the item shops...for a freaking browser game! I'd gladly pay a sub for a good game...I'd even hop on the free2play plan if the game was good enough, but I would never spend anything on a browser game that the developers probably put together over the course of a couple weeks...a month or two at absolute most.

I have no problem with being able to buy gear that affects game play. Why not? I haven't seen anything in an item shop that costs the $15 a single month costs. Pony up the bucks. I find most of the MMORPGs to be too easy. Presently I am playing Champions on extreme difficulty and don't really have much difficulty. City of Heroes was better on the difficulty level. I hated having to do the same quest over and over hoping for the drop I needed and then the luck to win it if it did drop. I would much rather have plunked down $5 and bought the item.

I understand there are people who don't like others being able to buy gear. I played WoW for 5 years, that's 5x$180. I doubt they have $900 of stuff I would have bought over that same 5 years. Cheaper. Forget the cost of the time I spent trying to acquire the gear on repetitive quests.

But it is never $5...it will be like $50. I think what bothers my arrogant little gaming ego is that when they sell items that really effect the game play than it isn't a Free2Play game. Sure, you might be able to log on and walk around, but what if you didn't buy the stuff and no guild would take you in? or you were always dead last in pvp? That is what is starting happen...it isn't bad yet, but it is getting progrssively worse.

If they just called it "Pay as You Play" I probably would not have a problem with it. I am just wierd like that. I hate under handed schemes...just put it out in the open for what it is.

F2P is the absolute last thing SWTOR needs. Plus it's pretty much confirmed that it will have a monthly subscription. Whether it will have any other type of microtransactions as well is still unknown.

To be honest one of the best micro transaction systems so far that I have seen is done in guild wars. The stuff isn't extremely expensive, and they don't massively alter the game. Just like Vagrant Storm talked about. I am not interested in learning more about this game... Anyone know the ETA on this thing?
