Buying a 6970 is not optional here since its about 50$ more than 2x6790s and I have to get the setup in a few days.

go w/ the 6950 2gb, single card solution are sometimes the best. Scaling is remarkably good on the 69xx series so if you decide to add another 6950 2gb in the future it will surely run most games maxed.

Btw, if you go w/ the 6950, bump up your cpu oc to 4.0. I easily got my old 955BE running 24/7 at 4.0 though make sure you use an aftermarket cooler or go water smile.gif

wow, people totally forget amd makes mid and budge cards. please read the op and op's last post. Opening post/main question: Two 6790 vs one 6950 2gb.

He just stated 6970 is out of the question.

Amd Hierarchy (descending):
6990
6970
6950
6870
6850
6790
6770
6750
etc

I'd go 1x6950 2GB over 2x6970 1GB all day long, and twice on Sundays.

It's double the effective vram capacity, it can be x-fired later, no chance for crossfire compatibility issues, no microstutter, and it is in every way more future-proof.

It's also probably nearly as fast as 2x6970's would be, but that's just a guess on my part as I've not seen a review with 2x6970's before.

AMD made a huge mistake by naming that card '6790' -- look at all the literacy problems that have arisen. tongue.gif

This just proves that 40% of computer geeks dont know how to read biggrin.gif

on topic: Go with the single 6950 because there will always be games that dont scale good on multiple gpus

lol I didn't think it'd make such problems.

Well okai, seems I'm going for the Sapphire HD 6950 2GB (I heard it should unlock as well), thanks guys.
