Windows 7 + EAX effects. What do you do?

Thread Starter
Theres an issue I would like to discuss with you guys. I dont know if its true or false.
But for all you people running windows 7, or just have knowldge about it, please help me.

The reason why I have been sticking with my xp64bit for 2 years now, is because it still uses "direct3dsound" feature. And therefor I can still enjoy EAX at its full performance.

However in vista MS completly killed "direct3dsound" and to gain EAX effects again, you needed a program called alchemy from creative.
Its still the same in windows 7? Alchemy does not support every game out there. So what do you guys with windows 7 do, to gain EAX effects once again?

This is whats keeping me to abonded my xp64bit. I enjoy the EAX effect. Even todays modern games uses them. But vista/windows 7 does not have "direct3dsound", and therefor no EAX supported.

The fault lies with Creative. They simply refused to code right and implemented stupid workarounds like ALchemy. If in the past you had a multitude of games working with EAX now you have to make do with what ALchemy supports via OpenAL.

The last alchemy driver update, is more than 1 year old.

And judging by your posts, I think I'm still best off with my xp64bit, which I can fully use EAX in every game out there.

Wrong, MS removed "DirectSound" entirely from Window's Hardware Abstraction Layer With vista (they claimed it had something to do with stability, but i'm pretty sure they other reasons). Creative could do nothing about it, since now it isn't there to begin with.....

also not true, most games for pc that came out after vista was released DO NOT use EAX/directsound, they are usually in OpenAL or some other audio format that windows does support (why would they write audio code for a platform that doesn't exist on the OS people are using or the OS that is required to run the game?).

ALchemy has default profiles for many known Directsound/EAX enabled games, others you simply have to add to the program's list and they should all work....

Also, now that i look at your hardware. i come to ask myself WHY YOU HAVEN'T UPGRADED YET.
Your computing experience can be so much better with windows 7 on hardware like that.
Somehow i cannot justify EAX as a reason not to upgrade, especially when ALchemy will do that for you..... I have the same soundcard as you also..... didn't stop me wink.gif
I don't use ALchemy at the moment, but i would if i got Halo installed again tongue.gif

I guess you were not on the other side of the fence with a Creative Audigy Platinum EX that was deemed redundant by Creative as soon as Vista came out. When I spoke to Creative why my 200 euro soundcard sounds like an onboard on Vista with half the features not working I was told by Creative to upgrade to the X-FI series because they will stop working on support for Audigy. Oh and surely you forgot the *cough, your PCI-E is not fast enough* excuse when thousands of people were complaining of stuttering and metallic sound issues when using Vista.

As I said, the fault lies with Creative for not finding a more elegant solution. biggrin.gif

hmm...let me see if I understand everything the right way:

"ALchemy has default profiles for many known Directsound/EAX enabled games, others you simply have to add to the program's list and they should all work...."

So those (old?) games that arent supported by alchemy's gaming support list, can still be added to the program, and they should have their EAX restored again?

If that is right sir, I will follow up on your reply, and get me a w7 home 64bit. smile.gif

I had an SB Live! (EMU10K/EMU10K1) card that wouldn't work with vista either, strictly because it was exclusivly a DirectSound processor. Creative was basically Forced to stop supporting said cards when Microsoft decided it was in their best interest to remove DirectSound from the HAL (this included Audigy because it used the EMU10K2 DirectSound-only Chip). i think the only reason they created ALchemy was to (somewhat) appease customers with cards that did both OpenAL AND DirectSound (X-Fi and very late Audigy models)

As for the other problems, well i never experienced them on my PCI (not PCIe, so even slower) Xtremegamer on vista or 7, but maybe that's because they fixed those problems before i bought it, which was in 08/09, and newegg still had many reviews of those issues happening.....

If memory serves me correctly that's how it works..... as long as the game originally used DirectSound EAX, it should work with ALchemy.
The reason ALchemy hasn't been updated at all recently is that there are no new games being made that use it, and some ppl figured out how to get it to run using a non-creative audio card... you might want to look that up too....

I just found another program that could be Useful to you. I'm not sure if it will work on any cards other than C-Media's but the program claims to not need any user setup to work with Directsound in vista and 7 (meaning any game should work), its called Xear3D EX. i am looking into it right now and i will see what i can find for you biggrin.gif
