Backup software that fits THIS descrip.

Thread Starter
Okay I been searching high and low for software that fits this

I want it to install fully to a mobile location. Reason being is I wanna install the software to a disk that is not online all the time, and I only want the software to be able to run if that disk is in. I also don't want to lose my info if the disk is moved between installs, or if the OS disk takes a dump. Essentially, I want it to be able to operate as if it was installed to a USB drive. Portable, per-se

I want simple directory mirroring at the very least. What a normal person would call drag/drop backup, I would like automated

Recursive/updating backup, aka RAID/Mirroring. If SOURCE changes, the backup is updated.

"Time machine" or multiple mirroring.. If Source changes, backup is updated with "copy 2", "copy 3", etc

SyncBack SE/Pro is what I've used now, very effective, but my License expired and I want to see what else I could try before buying it again. Also, I can't get it to install as a portable app.

Thank you for any help, +reps to helpfulness

I'm a bit confused, maybe you can help me clarify your needs. You are looking for backup software that will:

1) Install on your portable media
2) Write a backup of the OS it is connected to to the portable media
3) No Differential Incremental backups, Instead, full Recursive backups

The best of the backup software out there and the one most likely to have what you are looking for would be:
ShadowProtect 4

The only fully portable backup software I know besides what you have is Toucan, however I have never used it (unlike the other 2) so I can't sya much about it.

For an awesome list of other free backup options check out Probably the Best Free Security List in the World

Unfortunately I have never found or heard of a good portable backup program.

I want backups of specific file locations

IE: I wanna have a HDD i can plug in, run the program and say "run this backup1"
backup1 will pull files from Directory X and put them on the HDD
then have "run backup2" and have it pull files from Directory Y and put it on the same HDD

Full recursive backup is preferred. This will be run manually like once a week.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm reading up on all 3 links you posted right now!

The only other thing you could do is get synctoy from microsoft, but wanting full backups would be the problem as it would just echo the new/updated files to the folder upon start of the sync.....

You could set up Windows backup, but I'm not sure that it does full, I'm fairly certain they employ incremental backups only.

Look into Robocopy. It's a native DOS prompt that you could set up to run via a .bat file. I use it to mirror my RAID1 over to my external, and I THINK it has the capabilities you're looking for.
