Help recovering lost data!

Thread Starter
Hi, Im in a big problem here, we have a laptop(HP) that is used by my sister and my mother. I set this laptop with 1 partition for OS and 1 for their files. I went out of town for 1 week and in this time my sister let her boyfriend "fix" the laptop. The idiot just did what every other HP technical assistance does, wiped the whole drive, repartitioned and installed OS.
So all my mother and sister files were lost, my sister was pretty pissed off when I told her the Data partition was lost. And well my mother doesnt know yet, but I think she is very fond of some of the files she had in there.

Is there a way to recover files from the HDD after it has been repartitioned?

Thx in advance!

You will need some very specific software to attempt to recover data at this point.

I can only recommend google! seriously.

Try using these 2 utilities, TestDisk and Restoration. TestDisk I know is free. Both should be able to get your files back as long as the "Moron" did not do a full/long reformat of the disk.

I started a scan using Restoration from Hiren's Boot CD, there's TestDisk available too, if they both fail Ill try Recuva.

Thanks!

Moron, I like the sound of that name, a great guy that moron named person is.

Yes, all the above recovery software is awesome. Though I must warn you, some of the files recovered, may be generically numbered with .jpg, .etc . exe, .whateverTheExtensionIs... Not because the name was forgotten, but the file at least is recoverable.

Some of these apps (looked into ish), are good for memory cards, sd cards, etc, ie, lost pics, (static shock, did that once), restored most pics, wasn't perfect, but recovered 9gb's from a 8gb thumb drive once... That was strange... but can happen...

Best of luck. My advice, encrypt the drive, and give them pin code of 6-10 #'s, and tell them only they can have it...

- Le_Loup

P.S. I work in a similar, field... ^_^

You can't fix stupid with a PIN number.

Anyway, since the drive was erased and Windows reinstalled, you can count on at least some files being lost completely and forever. That said, it may be possible to use TestDisk to recover the original partition layout and possibly reconstruct enough of the old filesystem for the data partition to recover files. If TestDisk failed, I would move on to PhotoRec.

As always, you need a second hard drive to write any recovered files to.

Download this
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hi...ootCD.13.2.zip

Here is how to make a boot Usb disk with it
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/usb-booting/

Boot with it then use one of the disk recovery tools to do it.

Otherwise you can do the following method. I've done this a couple of times do recover deleted partitions. Something I discovered me self so its your choice if you want to try it or not. Someone else if you have ever tried it or want to test feel free I would like to know if I was just lucky a couple of times or its a valid method.

First you need to boot up with that Usb disk. Then choose the xp live option and boot into windows xp which will be on the ram drive.
Then you choose the menu in the tray and under recovery tools choose ntfs get data back. Let it run for a min or two then press stop. Look at the files it found specifically for a file called index.dat. Now recover it on the Usb disk. When your done reboot and boot with the Usb disk again. Now choose one of the applications in the dos environment. Under recovery tools choose Partition table dr. Now first back up the current index.dat file by renaming it to index2.dat so you won't overwrite the one you recovered earlier on the Usb. Then choose the option to write the index to disk. Then choose your recovered index file and replace the one that was in use.

Reboot and the drive should be like before the format. Format just basically delete the index.dat file and creates a new one so basically recovering the old one you restore the index pointing to the deleted files.

All that should take you under 10 minutes to do.

Recuva, TestDisk and Restoration didnt work. Tried DiskDigger and it found files but couldnt determine size and name.

Googled Power Data Recovery:
http://www.powerdatarecovery.com/
It turns out its free for home usage and worked wonders! It found the deleted partition, and could recover most of the lost files with the exact path, name and size!

Thanks so much for mentioning it, great software!
