Stock i7 920 fan not going above 950 rpm?

Thread Starter
Title pretty much says it all. My cpu will reach 100c when running prime 95 after a couple minutes without any o/c at all and my fan rpm doesn't increase in the slightest. I have tried looking for settings in bios and controlling it with speedfan but have had 0 success so far. I have always had high temps but I figured it was just because I have a c0 920 but this is the first time I have noticed this fan problem. I know I should get a new cooler but I'm tight on cash so hopefully someone knows how to fix this. Thanks in advance

I know this seems stupid but did you plug the CPU fan into the CPU fan header rather than a chassis fan header?

Check in the BIOS and see if there is any sort of fan control enabled.

There's only one option in the bios related to cpu fan control and its called cpu smart temp or something like that which lets you set the desired temp for the cpu. It was disabled by default but I tried enabling it and it didn't change a thing.

Why would you ever OC your chip on a stock heatsink? I know your post says the settings are stock... but your sig rig says otherwise.

Because my temps in games are usually not enough to damage anything although I usually just play games like WoW and LoL. When I try to play games like portal 2 or bad company 2 I get really high temps but I'm going to avoid them until I bring my temps down. The difference in volts from 2.66ghz - 3.6ghz is only +.03 to run it stable so its not a huge change in temp. With my OC I would get a temp of 100c in prime 95 after about... a minute and a half, without the overclock its about 2-3 minutes. So either way its terrible. I just recently down clocked it to stock so I can run portal 2 without crashing from overheating. Hopefully the fan rpm problem will bring my temps way down if i get it fixed, if not ill have to go for a new cooler I guess.

I know you're most likely uninterested in buying new hardware but check this:
http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1405&ID=1823

Would fit on your CPU and stock 1200-2100RPM.

Much cheaper ones on that site too.

Worst suggestion for a cooler. ever.

CoolerMaster 212+ is probably the best budget cooler on the market today:
