Need help building new system around GTX480 - Page 2

Even with sli 480's you don't need an AX850. Just trying to trim some fat to get you down closer to that 1k mark.

Edit: He's already spending hundreds extra, that's why I don't believe the 2600 is worth it at all, in gaming you're not getting barely any return. I've already said my opinion. Just trying to help. I'll step out now.

Any other thoughts/recommendations?
And any input for the question regarding the closed loop water cooling?

Since you're already WC'd, you would just need the corresponding CPU waterblock and you'd have to determine if you have enough radiator, especially if you're looking to add a second 480.

your current alienware closed loop cooler most likely won't work because ur CPU is a LGA 775 and the new 2nd gen i7/i5 is LGA1155. so you need to allow some budget for a new quality cooler to overclock.

by the way, if you only do gaming and general tasks the i5 2500K is recommended. if you do video editing, photo editing, intense 3D modeling, and other professional stuffs, then the i7 2600K is good.

the i5 is about $100 cheaper than the i7, and performance is about the same if u only do gaming and general tasks. you could put that $100 to a new cooler

btw the 850watt is good. 480 draws a lot of current, and ur planning to do overclocking on both the CPU and GPUs.

Yeah I was afraid of the water cooling incompatibility...How hard would it be to replace my radiator?
And yes, I do only game and do basic tasks, but I also code. Would the i7 be a better investment in that case?

Thanks for all the info so far guys!

BTW which one has better OC potential, the i7 2600k, or i5 2500k.
Performance wise, they seem to be the same minus HT. The different is 100 bucks and that is money I could put towards something else, or simply save.

I dunno too much about the specs on the various Sandy Bridge CPU's so I can't help you much there.

However, 'coding' doesn't really require much in the way of CPU power. Maybe if you're doing a lot of compiling of really large code projects you could shave a few seconds off the time it takes to complete ... but I dunno how many compilers there are out there that are going to really make use of > 4 cores.

So, I'm not sure there's a lot of practical value for you to invest an extra $100 to get hyper-threading on account of your being a programmer. And I know for sure that there's not many games that can make use of >4 cores (or threads, if you will).

But the main thing I wanted to jump on to say is this: the advice above that you should invest in less PSU for a potential SLI 480 build is ... not good advice.

An 850W unit is the minimum I'd recommend for SLI 480's if you're planning on OC'ing them. And if one was planning on h2o cooling the 480's (and thus probably pouring on the volts in order to reach a high OC), I'd recommend even more than that.

480's are power-hungry monsters, esp. when you start overvolting and overclocking them.
