choosing a machine

Thread Starter
hello,
i just finished installing CentOs 5.6 on my old machine
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
512MB ram
im plan to use it as a webserver and fileserver

i just got my hands on another machine
AMD Athlon 64 2800+

Which one will serve me better?

And can i just swap the HDD's instead of installing everything all over?

Thank you

the athlon64 will definitely work better in the long run. Not only does it run cooler and just as fast, but it is also 64-bit, which gives like a 5% boost in performance on older processors like that one (true, win7 32bit on my 3500+, tripcode explorer got about 670k, on 64bit it went up to 850k, and everything else ran faster). And then there is the ridiculous amount of ram they can support (1TB physical, 256TB logical).

No i doubt you can get away with simply swapping the drive over.

CentOS has a wide variety of supported hardware... if I was a betting man, I would bet that you can swap the drive to another machine and it would boot. you might have to reconfigure a few things if there is additional hardware or other major hardware differences. but there should be enough stuff already in the default install that would allow you to boot off almost any machine with similar instruction set/compatible hardware. it can't hurt to try at least...

as for P4 vs Athlon, I have no opinion...

Thank you for the answers
If i choose to switch a machine i will probably reinstall everything
because i can install the 64 bit version on the AMD...
Any other opinions on AMD vs Intel?
This is the motherboard that is in the AMD machine: MSI MS-7142
This is the motherboard that is in the Intel machine: Asus P4S533-VM

And I just wanted to ask if i should install the 64 bit or 32 bit version since
i only have 512MB of memory , i might upgrade to 1 gig but i heard that 64 bit version uses more memory than the 32 bit...

And what do you guys think about amahi?

thanks
