New Water Cooling setup advice

Thread Starter
Have a CM Storm Sniper case I am going to be moving my build into. Rest of build is in sig. Computer is used for web development/graphics and gaming ( BC2, Starcraft, etc Battlefield 3 soon

I want to cool CPU and both 470s ( with full coverage blocks ). I don't overclock at all now, but would like to. Won't be going for extreme overclocks though. Main reason is for fun and reduce the noise/temps on the 470s.
Want to keep costs reasonable, but will spend what I need to get it done right.

I would like to keep it all inside the case. Is this even possible with storm sniper?

Any advice would be appreciated. Been researching/looking at water cooling for a few days now and have a pretty good idea of what is out there as far as water blocks etc go. Still iffy on pumps, rads, fans ( would like to use something really quiet like the Gentle Typhoon 13s I see mentioned here repeatedly ) etc and the best ones to get that will be least intrusive with the Storm Sniper and still cool well.

Thanks!

If you were willing to mount your HDDs in your 5.25 bays - a far better option for noise anyway - then you could remove the 3.5 bay assembly and mount Phobya's 200mm rad in the front, and an RS240 up the top, depending on how much space you have. You could also stick an RS/RX120 in the back, if you needed more surface area.

I don't know what sort of room you have in the case, as I can't see very accurately from pics online, but I know someone that mounted the 200mm rad in a 600T, and all they had to do was pop a few rivets on the 3.5 bays.

I agree with this, you're going to need a fair amount of radiator to dump heat from 2 470s.

Also, since you should be running the GPUs in parallel, the flow will be split between them.

For that reason I wouldn't go for a rasa kit. It might not make that much of a difference, but if it didnt work well you'd need a new pump, and custom loops are cooler anyway.

For the pump, I would recommend a D5 style for the greatest flow over those cards, especially if you might add a third.

I know you weren't keen on the idea, but an external mounting of say a 360 rad would probably be the best option.

As for manufacturers, it's generally agreed that XSPC provide the best bang for buck on blocks and rads. So getting a Rasa 750 RX360 and a couple of GPU blocks and links might be a good plan for you. I'd look for somebody who has done something similar first though, there's bound to be somebody on here.

Edit:
This guy looks like he has a full 360 rad up in the top of his case, that's what I'd go for for rad placement.

Ok. first off. Thanks for the advice so far.

1. Don't know what a D5 style pump is. Can you elaborate just a little?

2. I like the 3x120 rad mod for the top of the case. Is the mcr320 a good radiator? Looks like it is not too densely packed which I believe means you can run quieter/lower cfm fans? Any other recommendations for other rads of similar size that would probably work?

3. If I put the 3x120 up top and a single 120 rad at the back, would that be enough radiator for cpu + 2x470s? I am also considering selling/trading the 2 470s for a single 580, but would still want the loop to be able to handle a second 580 in the future if I decided to upgrade.

Thanks again.

D5 is the OEM pump that is then worked on and converted to become the pump for a number of manufacturers, i.e. the Swiftech MCP655 is a D5 variant pump, just reworked and resold by Swiftech.

Yes, the swiftech MCR320 is a good mid/low fan speed radiator. Best bet is to take a look here and decide which will work best for you. Keep in mind the heat output/wattage drawn for your components that will be in the loop.

It would likely be enough for stock settings (no/low overclock), but they might run warm (water temp - air temp = delta T, you may have a high delta T, meaning your components will run warmer relative to someone with a lower delta T.). Whatever you do, your temps will probably be better than with air cooling, and you'll almost certainly reduce fan noise dramatically.

Yes, it's a good pump for a good price, but you should also find a Reservoir top for the pump to add a reservoir while also increasing the performance of the pump itself and adding G1/4 fittings on it which will be comparable with fittings that can make it comparable to the rest of your loop.

Best of luck!

For what is a D5 pump, I think that only really makes sense if you put it into context:

The other type of pump used in computer systems normally is a DCC pump.

D5 pumps tend to have higher flow rates, but DCC pumps often have higher pressure (which can mean a higher actual flow rate in very constrictive loops)

That said, D5 pumps are by no means weak on pressure and are probably the better of the two styles imo.

If anybody knows a good link to one of martinm210's pump tests now would prob be a good time to post it

Good rads for slower fans, I'm quite a fan of hardware labs, so I'm going to say the Black Ice SR-1 360, the cheap option would be the XSPC RX360, but you wont go far wrong with the swiftech rad either.

With that much rad, yes your loop will be able to handle it, but you might be running a few degrees hotter than if you had only one GPU. That goes without saying in most loops that don't have something silly like 10+ fans of rad space though.
