AMD/ATi Chimp Challenge Recruitment Thread!

SIGNUP THREAD

AMD 5/6 series GPU owners, that time of year is here again... when your GPUs are needed for team OCN! For 10 days we will be challenged by the biggest and best Folding@home teams in the world in the 2011 Chimp Challenge, and we need to unite to best them all.

This is a bigger time for you than most other forums, since Stanford recently released the new v7 Client. And this means access to new Core16 WUs for AMD 5/6 series GPUs. Now, it's still in the works, so not fully optimised, but it's double the PPD of the old WUs in most cases. If you've a dual core CPU, or aren't CPU Folding at all, you can really contribute with you GPUs to the event. The GPU guide is available here:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...ing-guide.html

For those of you not using their CPU to Fold at all, this thread may also be of use:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...s-2-cards.html

So, not only will we be showing the world OCN is the greatest site of them all, but we will also be contributing to invaluable research to the Folding@home Project. So we can have fun, and do good for someone.

~I've been hearing about the Chimp Challenge - what is it?
The Chimp Challenge is a Folding@Home contest between 9 of the major Folding teams. It is run over 10 days, and the team with the most "Chimp Points" at the end will be crowned the Chimp Champ. The victorious team gets to claim the lucky jaded monkey as the prize.

We all Fold using the same username for this event, so take a look at the thread linked below for more info.

~When is it?
The competition officially begins on the 5th of May (Thursday), and will run for 10 days (until Sunday the 15th of May). The Challenge begins and ends at 12pm Noon PDT (7pm UTC).

I can do crash course.

Ok, so you can either run your CPU on -bigadv WU, which give the biggest points, but would require you to Fold almost 24/7.

Or else, you can merely do SMP Folding, on 4 of your threads, and then GPU Folding, with each GPU taking a core. This would allow you to Fold any amount of hours in the day.

I can provide guides and instructions, though which ones depend on how you'd like to Fold.

I think the latter, smp and gpu folding would fit the bill. I would have thought that gpu folding would net the biggest gains, but it doesn't?

Generally if you have an OC'd i7 you get more PPD/watt (so it's cheaper to run), but i7s tend to cost a lot at the same time. If you run CPU's on the SMP client you'll net yourself about 15k PPD (that is, your CPU).

No... CPUs with 8+ threads have the option of doing -bigadv WUs, which have very large bonuses. It does, however, require a lot of time.

Ok, instructions.

• Follow post 1 here. Make sure you select GPU (not SMP).
• Go to post 4, and enable Core16 WUs for all your GPUs. These aree the new, more efficient ones.
• Back to post 2, which will explain how to add an SMP client.
• Finally, click "Configure"> "slots"> highlight "smp" and click "edit". Change the number of threads being used to 4.

Seems long and difficult and boring and awful and , but it's not. Well... it might be a bit boring, but it's not difficult.

And I'll be around should you need a hand with anything.
