What would be the best coolant?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
I bought a WC loop off frozencpu.com and it arrived today. I flushed the rads and now it's leak testing (using tap water + a silver kill coil) before I put the loop in my pc. My dad pointed out an idea that seemed good to me as a coolant but wanted advice from experienced water coolers who have tried it already. I was thinking of getting some glycol ethylene to put inside my loop. It's supposed to cool a little better than distilled water (which I had originally planned on) and also looks really awesome (yellowish color ). What I'd like to know is would this be a good solution? Would this stain my blocks like the additives you can buy for a WC loop do?

Thanks in advance!

Stick with distilled water. It'll be about a billion times cheaper ($3 a gallon at your local supermarket) and will only be 1 or 2c less effective than some branded rubbish.

AFAIK, it should be fine but you probably shouldn't just run glycol, mixing it with distilled water would be better.

Normally distilled water runs the same as any "coolant" on the market. Honestly gylcol makes almost no difference and its poisonous iirc. Really distilled water and a kill coil/pt nuke is all you need as long as you are not mixing metals which rarely happens these days. You also have to watch the viscousity if you are really that bent on putting the gylcol in because if its to thin/thick you can lower the life on your pump.

I did a bit of reading and the reason glycol ethylene is used as a coolant is not because it's better at heat transfer (it actually has about only half of water's heat transfer capacity), but because it has a really low freezing point and a really high boiling point.

It's not going to perform nearly as good as water, and it only makes sense if your loop will be below freezing temps or above water's boiling temps.

Unless you are TEC/Phase cooling then you don't need to worry about freezing and water will never boil in your loop if it does your temp/v regs are shot and I'm not sure how your pc hasn't caught on fire lol.

Exactly. There's no point in the OP choosing it over water.

Edit: Also if it's yellow, it WILL stain your loop eventually; Pure ge is colorless, which means the yellow is an added dye.

I used it for a year in my loop
had some small specks on the WB
but that was it

I'd just use distilled water
saw about 2.5c drop in temps with it

Ethylene Glycol is antifreeze, and is used b/c it has an insane boiling/freezing point. So theoretically, you could have it last longer (less evaporation) but it would be minimal. Distilled water will work fine.

In terms of the best coolant in the WORLD for a CPU, that would go to LOX.
