Need help deciding upgrade

I don't get very good performance with my 5850's in CF with the resolution that I want to play at. I am only able to use 3 of the 6 monitors I have, and the frame rates aren't too great. I am ready to do a partial upgrade. Where would I see better performance, a HD 6990/6970 2gb and keep my CPU and board, or get an 2500k and a new mobo? Ideally I would like a card that could handle all 6 of my 21 inch monitors. Also how much could I get out of my current CF setup? They clock like beasts 1000/1200 stable at 1.2v, daily operating speed/volt is at 800/1125 @ .9V 37c.

Well if your going to do a 6 monitor setup the way to go would be X-fire. I would go with the 6970 2 GB X-Fire, that should be able to handle the resolution you want (using 6 monitors) with enough memory buffer. Of course the 6990 in X-fire would definitely be better and that's what I wish I could get!

Thanks for the response. Would 1 6970/6950 be able to handle 3 of my monitors at max settings? Then down the road I could get another for CF and then use the other 3 monitors. Or more easier said, would a 6970 be better than my current CF setup? +1 rep

It might or might not be better, but heck, it would be pretty close (5850 XFire vs 6970), and later on you could Xfire the 6970. However, I don't believe that one 6970 would get you amazing (45-55+) frame rates on 3 monitors. Maybe a GTX 580 SLI or 6970 Xfire would be the best option (or if you really want to, 6990 Xfire).

Bought a PowerCooler 6970, we'll see how it does. Is it possible to crossfire a 6970 with a 6950?

I am pretty sure it will underclock your 6970 to 6950 speeds.

I am pretty sure you are right but it still would blow one 6970 out of the water

Most definitely. But if you are going to spend the money on an extra 6950.. you might as well do it right and have two 6970's.
