6990 + 6950 trifire issue

Thread Starter
hey guys. just installed my 6990 and 6950 unlocked into 6970 into trifire setup. Problem is I'm getting bad performance on crysis 2 and 3dmark06. I ran 3dmark 06 and got a score of 26000. My 5970 scored better than this. Also in crysis 2 im getting around 50fps less with vsync on, on max settings 1900 x 1200 resolution.

This is my first time setting up 2 cards at a time so I might have missed something. I'm using 11.4 drivers and latest CAP. Also opened GPU-z and showing 3 cards enabled?

any ideas guys? have i done it all correctly?

cheers

you've enabled xfire and do the cards all show activity in CCC?

yep, Enable CrossfireX is ticked. When I go to AMD Overdrive, theres 3 option in "Select GPU to configure" drop down box. Just rank 3dmark06 default settings and got 27000, ran 3dmark11 and got 10888 in Performance setting.

is this normal or should i be getting more?

The problem is that the 6990 contains of two 6970 chips which are Cayman XT and the 6950 contains of the Cayman Pro dispite the Shader unit amount difference their are other little problems indicated such as unequal RAM timings and other little unsimilarities which disturb the full synchronization of CF with the 6990 and the unlocked 6950 of yours.
In theory CF with any AMD model of card should be fine but the reality shows that it sometimes can cause some unstable operation of the gpu.

Consider that and make sure you have the latest drivers installed and CF fully enabled because even without 6950/6990 CF those scores seem pretty low.

thanks mate, I'm pretty sure they are all enabled since it says in CCC and GPU-Z. Is there any other ways too make sure?

In regards about performance issues in Crysis 2, Crytek put a cap on the FPS for a smoother game play. I play on 5760x1080 and I can only achieve 30fps while using 2x6990.
While gaming on 1920x1080, I can only achieve 80-90fps. When Crysis 2 was first release, I was used to seeing 150fps but I had horrible flashes and lots of screen tearing. After a patch or two, flashes and tearings were gone but FPS dropped significantly.
Not sure about your problem with 3dMark06.

For comparison I get 11K in 3DM11 on Performance, so I think your 6950 isn't working.

The HD6990 uses HD6950 memory clocks, even when the OC switch is thrown.

It is not about the clocks but rather the timings that are unequal that could cause instabilities.

OP try to flash the 6950 to a full 6970 BIOS this way the timings and other marginal differences will be updated to 6970 standards and the CF synchronization will be a 100%
