Just some advice please!

I am considering buying myself a second 5870 to run crossfire... gaming wise I'm still pretty happy with my single 5870, though I expect BF3 (as far off as it is) to need a bit more oomph and I can grab one cheap from a friend if I don't dally too long. Also a second one would let me steal my housemates monitors and run eyefinity if I feel like it .

Anyway, I am currently using a CorsairHX620 to power my pc and I think I am right in thinking this is going to be borderline with running crossfire considering I also have 5 hard drives multiple fans and an overclocked Q6600 drawing power like nobodies business at the moment.

Would a Corsair HX850 be a good replacement or could you guys recommend anything else? I'm in the process of browsing about looking at reviews but there is so much choice some pointers from you guys would be of much assistance.

Thanks!

The 620 should be OK, but possibly borderline as you say. But should you decide to swap, there are a lot better units these days than the HX850, like the AX series.
I'd doubt you needed more than 750w.

Antec TPN is a recommended range, go look around jonnyguru.com for reviews of power supplies.

I was thinking about getting something a bit bigger than needed for possible future proofing, I would be willing to pay a bit extra for that, I'll go dig around jonnyguru like you say though, cheers .

Silverstone has an office en Duitsland, and the Strider+ 750w is a great unit, and fully modular, just as another suggestion.

I think I have boiled it down to a Silverstone Strider Gold 850W and a Corsair AX850 and a XFX Black edition 850W.

The first two are around 150 euros with the XFX Black Edition at 114 if I order it from Germany.

Is the XFX Black Edition a good one to punt for? Reviews say good things but the more opinions I can get the better obviously .

And yeah they are a bit more Watts wise than I need but who knows what the next generations of graphics cards are going to pull.

664 watts will be reqired for full load for 5870 X-fire

If you go with PS makers recommended 30% over full load you come up with

a 863.2 watt requirment, that being said an 850 should work nicley with a 900 being ideal

best of luck

Like I said though I'm aware 850w will be somewhat more than is required, but I would be happier to have something that gives me a fair bit of headroom.

Just considering those 3 I mentioned above now.

If you don't run Prime95 + Furmark together for long periods of time, I'd imagine you would be fine with your HX620.

I run distributed computing software on and off and they can draw a lot of power.

Besides the 620 will end up going in another computer I intend to build .

Point taken though, I'll think about it though I wouldn't feel overly comfortable being borderline on the 620.

Maybe I will just get the 5870 and see how it goes with my HX620 and upgrade if I need to, in which case which of the 3 I listed above would you go for if you had to make that decision?
