Why would anyone buy a tablet? - Page 9

I don't see how it would be. There'd be nothing in there except the display itself (if you don't have a HDD/SSD) so if anything it would be lighter and flatter.

Just have a rectangular space for the phone to slot in, like a docking station, and make the space large enough so the phone isn't visible.

There'd be other internals besides the panel, like any monitor, and of course you'd need a battery to power it.

Internals that would already be inside a tablet anyway.

What is being added that would make it bulkier then a tablet?

The phone would be recessed and it would basically be the same weight as the main components in a tablet anyway.

In the end it would weigh the same.

I mean this is exactly what you are paying for right? Basically the same components in a smartphone except built into a larger display? The only real weight that would be added is the phone's own case/screen which is feather-light already

I'm sure in the next few years exactly what you're talking about will happen. It'll probably be wireless though and wont need the phone to actually connect to the screen.

Honestly I thought that this was how tablets were going to function in the first place.

This. The iPad 2 is thinner then most smartphones already.

I think that tablet computers have specific uses that they excel at.

1. Basic web browsing in the living room / on the go
2. Video watching
3. Portable basic computing

1. Basic web browsing in the living room / on the go:

Most laptops / netbooks produce a decent amount of heat. This heat is unconformable on the lap / stomach to a lot of people. The weight of the laptop and some netbooks is also detrimental to the consumption of the media.

2. Video watching:

Just like the web browsing issues, laptops and netbooks are not that comfortable to use when watching videos. Both laptops and netbooks will produce a nice amount of heat. Also most netbooks have a smaller resolution then modern tablet pc's.

3. Portable basic computing:

Is a tablet more portable then a laptop? Yes
Is a tablet more portable then a netbook? In most cases yes.

What do most people do with their laptops when out and about? Check their emails, browse the web, and maybe write / view a document or two. Tablets can do all of that.

In all 3 categories a smart phone can't compete. The experience is mediocre in all mobile computing categorizes.

I agree that it is a bit easier to use when doing this stuff but i still don't see how it's worth the $400+ for basically a thing you can use to look at the internet a little easier while taking away all the features of a full OS like windows that you would have on a netbook/laptop. I can see the cost justification in a smartphone because it's small and compact and not to mention it's a phone as well (unlike most tablets), but i just don't see a tablet being worth that kind of money.

Maybe I'll consider getting one when you can get a good one for in around the $250-300+ range, but not for what they are currently.

I'd rather spend $400 on a wacky inflatable arm flailing tube man.

It really depends on how much a person will pay for convenience. I agree with you on the price issue. Personally I won't buy a tablet until it's ~$300.

More functional as far as portability goes? Well, it can fit in a pocket and that about sums it up. With a tablet you might as well be carrying around a netbook/laptop. Unless for some reason you have to do what ever it is you're doing while standing...

portability isn't actually a function. it is a convenience. I don't have the need for a tablet personally... but my wife gets a ton of use out of her ipad. All she does is google, facebook, youtube, listen to music, the e-reader portion of it, which she can simply do while sitting on the couch.

she had a laptop and when it died she got an ipad 2. For what she does, it was just as easy to have a slightly larger purse for her this weekend to take it flying for use on the plane and in the airports than it would have been to have a laptop.
