Well, I guess the first question I should ask is the total budget for both. Both choices are decent although I'm not really a fan of the Shure SRH840's sound signature or its comfort levels. It sounds a bit too "pointed" to me and it has a weird fit on my head (the pads don't go around my ears properly).

The Essence STX is a fine card but IMO you can do better if you want it to be a bit more gaming oriented particularly if you're looking to play FPS.

will the STX is now the best sound card in overall performance mainly due to it`s high (until now the highest) signal to noise ratio (124db)

but for gaming i would recommend the X-Fi cards and the Fatal1ty Pro is great (many consider it as the best gaming card) about 145$

but since you are going to use headphones i will say to go with a card that has built-in headphone amp like the Auzentech X-Fi Forte (if you can still find one)

but as RallyMaster what is your budget for that sound system?

The headphone amplifier recommendation should only be heeded if your headphones BENEFIT from amplification. In this case, the SRH840 does not, in my experience unless you're driving it from a weak source such as an iPod.

good point
i have no idea about those current headphones but i tought that since he seems to be a headphone(r), a card with headphone amp will help him if he upgraded his headset sometime later

Have to disagree. This headphone benefits ALOT from headphone amplification. Moreso than other headphones that are similar to it.

Depending on whether his gaming is FPS oriented is really what'll decide whether he gets the STX or not and if he's not choosing the STX, I would just op for another headphone.

Interesting. I guess the last time I heard a Shure SRH840 was on a Claro Halo which is a sound card that has a headphone amplifier. You might be right, Simca.

I do have to say it was on the lowest gain setting though.

hh about the budge, its a problem.
i am living oversea(Israel actually), so out prices here are little bit more high, and different.
but lets says about: 180$ dollars-200$ headphones.
and sound card: pretty much the same.
so then, should i go for the deluxe version?
basically i need head phones and sound card, that will be good for both.
thank you very much.
