What do you recommend for 20-26 inch around? Which brands do you recommend which tv/computer monitors are best for performance/quality/price for him. I want him to get a good one. Do Asus Monitors do tv and computer usage?

Depends on how far you're away from the screen.
If you're close up, then you can get away with a 24" screen.
But if you're at a distance. I would be thinking a larger screen.

If you find a good quality monitor, TV usage doesn't factor into the equation.

It would be like asking for PC build recommendations that can allow you to max out Metro 2033 and do spreadsheets. If it can max out Metro 2033, it can do spreadsheets just as good.

For TV considerations I would consider going for a 16:9 screen (which most are nowadays anyways) since that's obviously the native ratio for HD broadcasts. Also, assuming you have a DVR box or receiver that you will connect to the monitor via HDMI, narrow your search to ones with at least 1 HDMI input (or two DVI if you want to use a DVI>HDMI adapter). Not sure if that's the route you're going or if you have an internal PC TV tuner card.
