To add to this, I installed Kubuntu. As you can see, it worked fine as I'm posting with it now. When I tried to install Windows 7, it shuts down in the middle of the install as previously mentioned.

That in itself made me feel a little fishy about it. Anyhow, it's cleaned and I went to install Windows 7 on it. Installation won't complete because it keeps shutting down in the middle of the process. Then when I go to re-start it, the install won't work because of an error. I'm hoping this is just a HDD problem, but insight from others is appreciated.
If Windows 7install stops in the middle of it all, try a BIOS update, as that seemed to be the biggest problem people had when 7 came out and were trying to upgrade their old machines that had XP.
Good luck!

Starting to think it's the compatibility issue with Windows 7, which is weird because it was installed on here when I got it. Anyhow, I installed XP on here and it seems to work, but I would really like to get it with Windows 7 working. I installed CPU-Z to check the make and model of the mainboard: Gigabyte EP43-UD3L. I went to the gigabyte website to look if there was a newer bios than 04/16/09. However, the site is asking me to search by socket. I don't know what that means. Any help?

NVM: I just needed to read further.

Okay, looks like updating the bios was more difficult than I remember. I got the latest update and extracted it to usb. I go into the Q-Flash utility to try to update it and it only lists a floppy drive. How do I update the bios?

You should be able to just run this in Windows XP:

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod...?pid=3499#bios

This is for the board you described above. You simply run the .exe that will download and it will update the flash.

There seems to be some revisions, such as 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. I would check to see which one your motherboard is.

Good luck!

Flashing in a OS environment even with the motherboard utilities is sketchy at best.

OP, make SURE you have the right motherboard model and revision and put the latest bios on the usb. The USB stick also has to be FAT32 formatted, NFTS will not be recognized. Find your oldest USB stick, it'll probably be the best choice.
