Help with Heatsink - Page 7

With the insane RAM that you got, you've hit jackpot. Surely the whole thing is worth like $300. I'd only replace the video card and the HDD (I'd wipe the disk with some deletion tool and scan for errors with SpinRite and use as a backup if it's still good to go)

Now i really mean it, get a GTX 460 and OC a little, that machine is pure gold for games, as long as you don't hope to play them all to the highest settings, but you can get pretty high quality from them. Hell, if my sig rig wasn't SLI, i think that thing OC'd t 4 GHz + a GTX 460 could go toe to toe with it if i turn off HT.

I'd invest a couple bucks more on good fans for the CPU heatsink tho, but that's just me, if temps are cold enough i'd even save the money.

The HD cable goes to the front panel of the computer. You'd have to open the front bays of the case and look for the headphones conenction.

The other one is a Firewire cable, look for any front connection for FireWire, and if you don't have one, it's prolly a leftover.

Cool find OP, jelly of that RAM + E8400.
If that was directed at me, there's a difference between grabbing for attention and correcting when someone who calls me a man.

This is wrong.

People (I'm speaking in general, not just to you here) need to get out of this mindset that core count defines if it bottlenecks a certain GPU. Whether it is bottlenecked is going to be defined by the use, that is, which game is played. The CPU might bottleneck the GAME if the game needs more cores than it has, but a Core 2 Duo E8400 can surely make use of more than a GeForce GTX 260. I speak from experience. I can go and play a Grand Theft Auto IV, but then my CPU isn't so much of bottlenecking the GPU as it is bottlenecking the game itself. On the other hand, I can turn around play most other games and the GPU is often the bottleneck.

If the OP puts a GeForce GTX 460 or similar in, and doesn't play games that need more than two cores on it, it'll shine.

Engh, not sure I'd call 8GB insane by any stretch. 4GB is the minimum you want for 64-bit Windows (which itself is the ideal to have), and 8GB is becoming more the sweet spot, but it's surely nothing insane anymore. That was maybe more true in 2007 and 2008 when I got as much RAM, but not approaching halfway through 2011 when as much can be had under $100 easy.

I need to start garage shopping again. Didn't know deals like this existed.

What I circled in green, on the left somewhere (hidden from view) the black connect will connect to the board and the white looks like it would go to the Firewire port circled in green on the right.

Edit: Note to self, next time use a bigger point size in paint :-P.

Nice find DrC. For a beginner rig this is gonna be just right. Nice enough to do something with and should (lord forbid) something happen to it, you won't be set back mucho dinero. As you can tell by all the other posts this quickly becomes an addiction, and the last thing you want is to learn a new hobby on expensive HW. Cause mistakes do happen. But I'm happy for ya, cause that is a sweet sweet deal

Nice Find - small treasures like these always pop up at garage sales from time to time.

Might be interested in RAM. Are you selling?
