Upgrade possibilites?

Thread Starter
so i just got a free Dell Optiplex gx280 smt. it has pentium 4 521 with HT -single core with 2 threads when HT is enabled. 1gb of ram, onboard video.

i have $200 and i wonder what should i get to upgrade. ill keep the rest, case, dvd drive, hdd and psu(maybe)

i just need to upgrade my mobo, cpu, ram and ill use onbaord video on the mobo since i wont have enough money to get a new gpu probably, and if i do, id need a new psu.

suggestions? thanks

a mATX board will be good cause i think the case only fits matx

my advice, only keep the dvd drive and the hard drive (and card reader if it has one)

dell likes to use proprietary connectors for the front panel (usb/audio/firewire/switches/leds ect..)
will be difficult to reuse
also they use weak/underpowered psu, wouldnt be good on a new system

if you want to build a good pc later, you can start with a good psu and a gpu (maybe a case for later use)
then save up another $200 for the rest

might bottleneck a bit but that's what I would do.

I have that computer as my extra rig. I have a 2400PRO in it. Works great for source games. The stock PSU can take it.

i use my tv as my monitor at 1366x768 but i can use a dell 15" i forgot at what resolution. i was thinking if i got a triple-core with a 880g mobo and use 4250 graphics for mild gaming. thinking about running sc2 but it would be on low settings. then later upgrade the psu and gpu. maybe eyefinity my monitor and tv.

1. the 4250 can't take anything but HD video, a GTS250/GTX260 is good for low settings gaming at 1366x768

2. quad core not triple

3. you need 3 monitors for eyefinity, and a video card that supports eyefinity. eyefinity is extremely stressful on GPUs, CPUs, and RAM
