Sorry to be 'that person' but check this thread.

It recommends you don't overclock on that mobo.

Also have a look here at all of the MSI boards killed due to overclocking on a MSI with a 4+2 Phase count.

I would be careful at the volts you are running at.

ive come pretty far with my 555 than i have when i owned an athlon and my 550. ive experimented with my case repainted it added my own personal touch to everything. when it comes to over clocking ill look at others results and use it as a goal but i do it differently. most ppl do it straight multi. i dont like that to much it seems like a cop out way of overclocking... thats just my opinion and im not trying to offend anyone. from what ive come to realize is that o/c is like playing a video game you start off crappy but once you get a feel for it you develop your own techniques.

when i first started o/cing i screwed up several cpu's and mobos, you live and learn thats what o/cing is learning how to push your hardware to the edge without killing it.

thank you for the rep kryton
No problem, you deserved the rep.
It seems your 555 is probrably one of those that runs hotter than normal but that's the way it goes sometimes. Some chips like mine can stay rather cool, others don't play so well with temps when OC'ed.
I'm also lucky my 555 unlocks fully and is stable, the fact it's one of the first 555's by it's date (1004 date code) makes it an even bigger stroke of luck but I believe that's also when they were taking good Deneb chips and making them Callisto's to keep pace with the demand for these.

As for MSI boards, this one (790FX-GD70) is over 2 years old and still going strong with no signs of trouble but I'm aware of it's limitations too. Been looking to get another soon so I'd have a backup "Just in case" since these have a tendency to go bad, mainly due to fried MOSFETs or so I've seen. I'm definitely not trying a 6 core with this one because of that very tendency, the 555, 720 and others I have is enough for it as is.

May try a Gigabyte board this time around.

umm dude check your resources my board isnt even on that list. it lists the winki edition i have the standard the two boards are different. not trying to be rude. thanks for the info though even though im not listed. on the second list the issues with my board all regard the x6 im on an unlocked x2

kryton
yeah my board does have its limitations and i am aware of them but i have taken precautions to help prevent my vrm's from exploding my vrms do not exceed 52c at any point. it usually stays at 48-49c which is what it stays at on stock. so i am lucky with this board and i am lucky with my 555 it unlocks to an x4 that is stable at 1.4v which is the same voltage it is as a dual. even as a dual it does run pretty hot compared to others but id rather it run hot and be an awesome overclocker and hit 4ghz even as an x4. i consider myself very lucky in all aspects. my board blows power supplies if i push past 1.6v so i guess every mod i have done to my board to keep the vrm's/nb/sb cool has paid off id rather blow a power supply then my board being fried.

i am however in the market for a new motherboard. as of late ive been in a debate to buy a new mobo or get the xspc rasa 750 kit and ditch my modified Frankenstein h50. im leaning toward a new mobo as this time next year i would like to be on bulldozer. so im holding off on any upgrades for a while with the acception of my psu that was an accident i blew it up overclocking my 5850. it was slowly dieing and i had forgot to bring my cpu oc down and blew the sucker. luckily i have a cheap crappy back up to last me till Wednesday

thanks for killing my hard work & accomplishment even though your trying to help i guess...i didn't know msi was that bad !!! and i always loved their boards but i guess i should switch companies now

are you sure thats your max fsb? i used to think mine was 272 till i pushed higher sometimes with the fsb you just need to keep pushing till you hit a higher number thats stable mine finally settles on 300 and then 320 between 300 and 320 the fsb doesnt like my cpu. it really depends on how ballzy your feeling if you want to push it or not. if 282 is working good for you and your comfortable with it then stay with it.

Sorry mate, didn't mean to upset you, I thought it would be better to point out the dangers rather than risk you killing your mobo without warning.

It might be worth while to post in one of the threads I linked to and ask about your mobo.

And for a spec of hope, in the thread I linked with all the dead MSI boards no one has killed the model you own.
