Phenom II ..Worth it?

Thread Starter
Hey lads,

Doing some upgrading to my system recently, iv ordered a WD Caviar Black HDD, and new 1kMHz ram, im also hoping to up my CPU today aswell if i can, with the help of the pros here ofc. Hoping to get a Phen2, 3.3ish maybe BE if my rig can handle it.

What im asking is,
1: I have the latest bios flashed on my board, will i be able to utilize a Phenom II x4 on my current board?
2: Will i see much difference?, given that the other components of my rig arnt exactly new, For gaming & emulation mostly, along with college work ( just visual studio/netbeans mostly)
I know these might be stupid-ish questions, but id really like to be certain before buying, thanks.

Thanks alot for any input to this, its greatly appreciated.

From my quick searching about your board's processor support as long as your board is a 'V2' edition it should be able to handle a 125w processor.

I would look into:

A) Phenom II 720BE (Triple Core)
B) Phenom II 840 (Quad Core, no L3 Cache)
C) Phenom II 955/965

Getting a 720BE and overclocking would be the safest bet out of the selection I mention.

Its a month before bulldozer, can you wait it out? You wont to be future proof, so you get your full monies worth.

Mobo, CPU, and RAM should be changed. Because DDR2 isnt backwards compatible with DDR3

I know this sounds a bit stupid, but i haven't changed the mobo in this before, so im a bit skeptical about doing so, with compatibility etc

I would also recommend waiting for Bulldozer.

However, atm, perhaps this could be helpful.
