Ordered 2500K. Is there a point upgrading from my Q9650@4GHz? - Page 8

Poll Results: You knew I had several Intel SSD's. And now I've ordered a Sandy. Are you jealous?

But I have to agree with Grunion.

It will be faster, but it won't blow you way. If all you did was benchmarks and heavily threaded professional work, then yes, the 2500k would be a nice improvement.

For gaming, you might see an extra 10-15 frames per second, if that.

I also upgraded from a Q9550 @ 3.8ghz, and while I am extremely happy with my rig, I know am fully aware that my Q9550 could have lasted me another 3 or 4 years if I wanted to.

Yeah, but my Q9650 rig would not have had the power if I wanted to go GTX 570 SLI (Via the SLI hack). Also, as an Enthusiast I like to have new things to fickle with.

At least we can upgrade to Ivy Bridge as soon as it hits the stores

Even though I actually plan on keeping my 2600k as a gaming CPU for a long time. I will later buy (in 2 or 3 years) a used Ivy chip to use as backup.

Yup that is online play and after I posted I jumped in a 32 man game. I normally didnt get 100+fps now I do. Before with Q9550 I had about 50-90 fps. Now i stay constant 100 fps and maybe dip to 80's. Its great.

Of course it's the same socket and same chipsets. If you're upgrading you might as well inform yourself of the upgrade path. Intel will release a new chipset when Ivy launches, but it is just to complement the launch of the CPUs.

It's just like when Intel introduced 45nm Core 2 CPUs. They introduced the P45 chipset, however, even P35 and earlier worked fine with them.

It seems to me you're upgrading blindly.

No, I was not upgrading blindly, cause I do not believe anything this year or next year will be substantially faster than Sandybridge.
