I voted 580. If you've got the money to spend, get the best card available so that it lasts the longest. My only regret on the 570 is that I didn't go with a 580, even if I'm overclocked past a stock 580...

However, if you want to go 560 but don't like the EVGA's normal color on it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-628-_-Product
Bit of a price hike over normal, but you get Crysis 2 included and a T-shirt or something while keeping the lifetime warranty.

How can you argue that the 580 isn't a good card?

Its the fastest single GPU card on the planet, runs significantly cooler than the 480, is 20% more efficient than the 480, is quieter than the 480 and runs anything you can throw at it. And lets not forget that the 480 was the fastest single GPU card in the previous generation. So that is no mean feat

Yes, it must be a terrible card
AND... it's horrible value, which automatically makes it a crappy card. Being more efficient, cooler and quieter than one of the worst recent GPUs is not much to be bragging about. Did you forget the fact that the OP has no problem with his current GTX 260? Why are you recommending a GTX 580, then? A GTX 570 or a Radeon HD 6970 will have much better value and he'll be able to play games at much higher settings than before. If he gets a 6970, with a quick OC he'll be within spitting distance of the GTX 580. It's only 13% faster stock yet you pay 35% higher. You can easily make up for most of the lost performance with an over-clock.

It all comes down to what you want. Everyone knows you can buy a cheaper card, overclock it, and have it beat a more expensive model. But at the same time you can overclock the more expensive model and blow the cheaper model out of the water.

You can't justify a cheaper card becuase it can be overclocked to contend with the more expensive card becuase the more expensive card can also be overclocked.

Its the same with buying 2x a cheaper card to have the same performance as a more expensive card. Sure you get a good deal, but then you also have to take into account SLI/Xfire compatibility, extra heat and cooling and so on....

It's not as black and white as your trying to point out, but bargain hunters would of course be wise to heed your advise.

Except that even if you over-clock the GTX 580 it's still horrible value, of course. Look up point of diminishing returns. That will give you some insight. Again, the GTX 580 is only 13% faster than the Radeon HD 6970. If a game comes out and is unplayable on max. settings on the 6970, it will more than likely also be unplayable on the GTX 580. 13%, again. We're not talking like it's a good deal faster.

I say the 560. It's superb value and overclocks like a mofo. Also it has DX11 and if you decide to upgrade on 18 months time you won't feel so bad on account of how much you spent on the 560.

Neither of your choices I would entertain. There's a MicroCenter in Jersey. If you live near it, you can get a Zotac GTX 480 for under $300 after rebate (for me...$293). TigerDirect is selling it for $320. MicroCenter's policy is to price-match TigerDirect and take an extra 5% off. It will be $304 + tax w/ a $40 rebate. For under $300, you have GTX 570 performance with more vram, a cooler card than the GTX 570, and it still has some room for OC'ing

I was in the same situation like you last week. I was debating between the 6970 & the GTX 580. I just wanted something new. Although money was not an issue, I do like to spend logically regarding to cost/performance. The GTX 480 AMP was there to fulfill the need & there are no regrets overhere
BTW...If you need some proof of this outstanding transaction, just hollar & I'll show you

Thanks for all the help everyone!
I've decided to stick it out until the end of the year to see what my options will be when I upgrade to LGA 2011.

560Ti, nuff said. Thing is like the 260 of the Fermi era. Cheap, fast, not that much compared to their bigger brothers.

560Ti < 570 < 580 < 590
260(55nm) < 275 < 285 < 295

I would say you will see about 30-40% increase over a a single 260. If you can overclock it to 1000 core, you can have close to 570 performance

Honestly I don't see why anyone cares all that much about these last 2 generations of gpus. They effectively are useless if you already have a card from the previous generation.

Why? Quite simple really - game developers have gotten lazy as hell when it comes to PC. And they should really, its more profitable, but the end result is that pretty much anything can be played near max on an older card, or its just so badly ported that even the newest cards wont run it.

And yes I know they are still very powerful and will be better for "future games", except at the current rate, future games wont need better hardware until new consoles hit the market... in a few YEARS, at which point anything you buy now will be useless anyway.

So in short, save the money for when its needed, or upgrade some more useful part of your computer...
