Interesting, I didn't realize SLI 6970s and SLI 580s were so close in performance.

Those old reviews put the 580 1.5gb against the AMD 6970 2Gb at higher resolution and only two out of many games. Means little to nothing. More vram will get you better results on higher res but not on 1920x1080p btw. That's why I suggested the 580 3GB version for multi-monitor set up and when those benchmarks come in which will be more current, you'll see the 580 3GB version do much better even on those same high res benches.

3GB comes with a price almost $600 (+/- shipping/tax). I could get 2x 6970 CF for that price.

Means little for these old reviews but here is three other benches. Metro 2033 most demanding game on the market on GPU.

Thanks for the suggestions!

What's the general consensus on what's better, Eyefinity or nVidia Surround?
Well AMD had more GB's per card and was the better choice for multiple monitors with larger resolution for quite some time until the GTX 580's came out with the 3GB cards this week.

Now you will do it less expensively with the AMD 6970's 2GB version and without problem, great cards. If money isn't an option, you'll do even better with GTX 580's 3GB version now.

Your right there, I didn't say it was less expensive btw. Just said better performance.

Your 260's are definitely outdated now, step it up and get a 580! Especially if you play games like Crysis, Metro, and CoD

The problem with this logic is that that while there may be newer and better, it doesn't mean theres any reason to upgrade.

Sure, you COULD replace your 500 RPM electric screw driver with a 600 RPM electric screw driver but if you're only using it to fix a broken door knob, its utterly pointless.

Games haven't become significantly more gpu demanding since the 200 series (unless you count horrible ports, and those don't get fast even with a 580 so its a moot point). There are very few instances where upgrading from a 260 will have practical benefits. The same money reinvested in another component (new processor, SSD, HD big enough to actually store something on it (OP is running off a 300gb) sound card...) or saved for a future generation GPU at the point where games DO demand it, would be far better spent.

Not saying don't upgrade, just saying don't spend limited upgrade funds on an upgrade that wont give benefits.

PS - Crysis is wonderful, but it hasn't been a PC killer for a while now. If you meant Crysis 2, i laugh at you. I laugh at you again for COD. Metro could use the horsepower though I suppose If you haven't already played it but its honestly not worth multiple play throughs. That is all.
