I agree, go with the Asus Pro, or perhaps a Asrock extreme4 or a Gigabyte UD4, all good boards that support CF/SLI in that price range.

Is he looking to go NV Surround/eyefinity?

I don't think so... but he may be getting a 2500x1600 30" monitor in the future and would like to keep the computer with minimum upgrading for a number of years (he's not very hardware savy).

I think you can move the push fan up some to fit the RAM. Should go 8GB either way while its cheap right now. Prices will change soon enough

and yah xfire 6950 will out perform a single 580. If you plan on gaming rig, that is the better setup.

So you think, cheaper mobo more RAM, maybe small SSD. And take the HD 6950s.

I'd go for the GTX580 over the CF setup for the same reasons as many have given. Not a fan of multi GPU setups, but, when games start to tackle that 580, you can always get another (and that would best the 6950) just in case, whereas the CF6950's have very little upgrade routes.

2gb's of VRAM definately help with >1080p resolutions, so i would suggest the 6950(or 2)

edit: The 6950's arent PhysX compatible if he will be playing any games that support it.

Maybe you should ask your friend which case he'd like, people have very different tastes. The HAF X is a great case, but if he think it's ugly corsair makes some beautiful cases like the Graphite 600T or Obsidian 650D. Another one could be a Silverstone RV02.
