It's not actually illegal to torrent software for your own use. What it is, is copyright infringement, and you can be sued for doing so by the publisher.
Why do you think you always here about the RIAA suing people who share music, instead of hearing about them being arrested?
It becomes only becomes illegal when you profit by selling/distributing software (or music or movies or whatnot) that you haven't properly bought the rights to distribute.
At least in the USA that's how the law is.
actually i'm going to be working in this field soon and currently there's a dollar limit until it becomes illegal.
for instance if you cheat a company out of a million dollars then you go to big boy jail...less than that and you're okay...
however, lets say you torrent 500 movies, and each movie is worth say 20 bucks, and you upload those same movies to about 60 people each per day for about 10 days (like normal torrenting really occurs)
60 people x 10 days x 500 movies x 20 bucks = 6,000,000
^that's how much you've been cheating companies out of in a matter of ten days if you're a heavy torredo traffic person...
granted most people do that in a period of a couple months...so yeah, laws are very real
and so is big boy jail (aka the fed pen)
