Lens suggestion - Page 2

My 50mm annoys me when I'm at car shows and trying to get pictures because I have to stand so far back and people are just walking right on by getting in the way of the shot etc etc.

I definitely recommend saving up for the 35 f/1.8 or Sigma 30 f/1.4. Both are fantastic lenses, and the focal length is much nicer to work with on crop bodies like the D3100.

I'm going to go against the grain and say you get the new 50mm 1.8G coming out. For everyday shooting I much prefer this focal length on a DX sensor.

+1. I own the Sigma 30 1.4, but for the Canon cameras. Beautiful lens, and the length is perfect for a crop body.

Just as an idea, my local camera shop has the Nikon 50mm f1/8 (old style) refurbed for $100. That's a nice lens at a nice price. I know the new model is coming out, but for over 2x cost at that point.
