8800 fan wont change

Thread Starter
whenever i try to change it in MSI afterburner it says its 100% but the fan is only 30% in reality. whats going on?

it happens when i play a game the fan will be 100% then the game will lag and gpu fan resets to 30% and wont change untill a reboot.

Give that s shot first, if a reinstall doesn't help roll back to a previous version. I know a friend of mine who's on Nvidia told me he's having issues with the latest drivers.

Had this issue with my 9600GT, I first noticed it when I knew I was playing a taxing game then realized the fan was nowhere near as loud as it used to be, then eventually the fan completely stopped or it would stay at default speed.

I tried several drivers, including software to manually control the speed and I heard no change even though the software displayed the fan as speeding up, which it wasn't.

Make sure you pay attention to sound as the monitoring software will still read the fan as if it's speeding up but it's actually not.

If you try multiple driver versions and try to manually control the speed and hear no difference it's likely a dieing fan.

And as expected on my new card manual/auto control works and I can hear the fan changing speeds.

not good i keep the fan at 100% 24/7 so as long as it doesn't drop back to default then im good to go

When the monitoring software says it went back to 30% do you actually hear the fan slow down ?

This is very important

That's what I was afraid of

If you're sure you've heard it at 100% before and it says 100% but there's an obvious volume difference.. you might be in the situation I was for about 1 month up until last week. You're going to have to monitor your temps in-game now. Try MSI Afterburner's On-screen display, it will be viewable in any game. I had to do it when I had my old card to see what the temps were which told me if the fan stopped. Everything else being monitored was accurate, except fan speed.
