Overclocking 6970 what is safe?

Thread Starter
My last card 8800gts 512 I didn't touch the vcore, I only adjusted the Clock/memory/shader, and tested it using(I forgot the program name)...

My questions are basically, how to OC this card? Use MSI afterburner and increase vcore to the card while adjusting the speeds or leave the voltage alone and just adjust in AMD Overdrive?

Also what program to stress test the OC with?

Stress with OCCT GPU stress test, fav games, and/or 3Dmark programs. Raise you core them memory separately and find the highest stable speed before moving to next one. Once you hit instability then back it off 5-10mhz to get it stable. Good thing is to test it with a program like heaven bench and check your score, then OC and once your scores start to drop then your getting into unstable territory. Even if no artifacts/crashes are present it is unstable somewhere whether its clocks or temps. I would keep voltage at stock and see how high you can OC before you raise voltage. You can use Afterburner to change voltage and overclock the card I would great program. Better to use single program to do it all IMO. You can try different programs to see if they will overclock differently but I think they will all be the same since you can overvolt with Afterburner stick with that if that is what you intent to do.Make sure you raise the fan speed and keep temps under 80-90c while clocking it for stability and longevity purposes.

up by 10mhz till you start artifacting (i used furmark) then back down by 5, until you find the maximum point where you began to artifact, then find the exact Mhz, decide if you are happy with this performance boost, and increased temps, then add 0.05 voltage, and add another 10mhz each time until you artifact, (12 mins of furmark was good for me) then repeat until you've maxxed out temps/voltage you are ok with, 1.3 is the max on msi afterburner so i keep it under that, max i would go to with my 6970 was 1.250 and i achieved 980 on the core, didnt OC anything else, as i didnt feel the need to, memory speed does very little in all honesty, (compared to core) mine wasn't a good clocker though, so i kept it at 980, but mine artifacted at stock anyway sooo...

Good info wasn't sure on the voltage limits of that card, Furmark will really push it so instabilities will show up faster then other programs. OCing memory is kinda pointless unless you can get a really good increase. In f@H it doesn't help at all some games will benefit slightly.

The max I would go is 1000mhz/1500Mhz, at 1.3v.

So stay below 1.25V, 1000MHz, and 80C and should be good for a gaming pc?(I won't fry anything? I prefer for the card to last a year or two...)

So far I have got it to 1000MHz with 1.238V. Furmark never does artifact for me but gputool and OCCT seem to artifact much faster for me.

Just noticed that using occt, furmark, gputool that it seems that my clock is being throttled. This doesn't happen in Kombustor.

Is this normal or is something wrong?

I have the 6970 lightning and I can't get this stable with even minimal increases. As a matter of fact after reset it will crash on stock settings.

EDIT,

Unigine at 980/1410 stock voltage. benched on Unigine and scored 1015.
