Sabertooth x58 SSD

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

I have been researching a TON about which SSD to get. I would love to get the vertex 3 or c300, but I have been reading a lot about:

1) Intel controllers not working correctly, or at 100% with the Sabertooth x58 over SATA III.

2) SATA III Marvell driver is slower, and not good for long-term drive performance.

Now, my questions:

1)Can anyone provide any validity on these claims?

2) What SSD would you recommend for my motherboard?

3) Does the Sabertooth p67 suffer from the same lack-of-support of native intel drivers over SATA III?

I see nothing wrong with the SATA II controller on my Sabertooth.

I have my data drive on the Marvell SATA III and still see nothing wrong.

I have a Mushkin Callisto Deluxe 60GB and love the thing!

I haven't seen anything directly about the Sabertooth, however I have seen benchmarks showing that the Marvell SATA III controller will under perform significantly compared to a native SATA III implementation. Here are results using a non-native SATA III on X58.

x58 uses marvell for sata 6 which is capped around 400mbps

i would recommend the c300. or vertex 2, but if you have the money go for the vertex 3 since it's only sequential that are being capped.

the p67? thats an entirely different platform, but no, the p67 uses intel's native sata 6 which supports trim and its not capped at 400mbps, unlike x58's marvell which does not support trim and it's capped at 400mbps.

I am comparing the Intel 320 120GB or the vertex 3 120GB drives.

What you are saying is:

If I get either drive, my motherboard will only limit the sequential read speeds, and not the random?

1) I call BS on those claims.
There are no issues with Intel chipsets and X58 boards.
Wherever you saw that issue, the user probably had a faulty motherboard.

2) Any SSD you want. Your motherboard will not affect the performance of any mainstream SSD.
Even SATA III will not bottleneck any mainstream SSD right now, so your motherboard functions independently of your SSD performance..

3) It's not lack of support. There is a chipset limitation where the southbridge can only run 4 SATA III devices, which is why any P67 motherboard with more than 4 SATA III ports has a third party controller (usually JMicron or Marvell) in addition to Intel's southbridge. So, 4 ports run off Intel's chipset, and x additional ports run off a third party chipset.

I'm not sure about the compatibility issues etc.. however, I'm running a Sabertooth P67 with Crucial C300's and they work fine (super awesome more like it).

as far as my knowledge goes yeah. however i heard the intel 320 doesn't have that great of random 4k. so the only competition here is the c300 and the vertex 3. i would lean towards c300 since it's cheaper and more physical space. about 9 gb more
