5850 power draw - Page 2

As long as it's a decent 400watt (antec 380, CX430) then I think it'll work just fine. If it's a no-name then no it definitely wont work

The card will be put in along with an Intel Celeron E3400 45nm CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 1 SATA HDD. (all stock)
no a good 430 o and up at least, with 28 or so amps on the 12v rails.

This isn't the most reliable, but it's pretty good. extremempowersupplylcalculator

I put in your system plus a dvd drive and some fans and it said 306w.

The power supply in question is the one that came with my dell dimension 8400. I heard dell under rates their PSUs, and this one is pretty reliable. This PSU is a replacement sent by dell for the one that came with my 8400 because I thought the first one broke (I was wrong), so I never used it.

EDIT: I was wrong this PSU actually has 2 12V rails at 18A each.

You can run the GPU on its own PSU if you don't mind having it sit outside your case. I run two PSU's on one of my rigs atm. One is only powering my 5770's and the other is for the rest of the system. Before, I had a 350w powering my 4870 on its own with another powering the rest of the system. Just something to think about if you are strapped for cash and have a few older PSU's laying around instead.

I'd rather just buy a new PSU if it comes to that

Before I upgraded to my dual 6990's I was running dual 5850's with an Antec TruPower 850W.

Yeah, I would too. Just offering another route if you didn't have the funds

You would be surprised on how little of a PSU you can get by on, if it is a quality made unit. I've ran a system with a 4870 on a single 350w PSU before, for a few weeks. It was pretty much bare bones though, no optical drive, minimal fans, only 1 HDD, etc. A 5850 draws the same or less as far as I know. Now I wouldn't recommend anything under 450-500 of course, but it can be done depending on what all you have in your system.

so the question then is: can a 400W power supply with 2 12V rails @ 18A each run a single 5850 + an E3400, 2 sticks of RAM, and 1 HDD?
