Annoyed with Best Buy's Gaming Department? Help Change It!

Hey everyone,

I just recently was promoted to Geek Squad at my local Best Buy but we've recently started interview for the new gaming department, which will include a new supervisor and a new full-time employee, and I need that health insurance bad.

One of the biggest things with the full-time interviews is giving the managerial staff an idea of how you look to change and improve on the current paradigm at work. Any fresh ideas are a good thing to have, as they generally frown upon spouting information that they already know like sales numbers, etc.

I'm wondering if any of you have any ideas of things that you would like to see at your local Best Buy. I know one of the biggest complaints on here and across the tech-savvy internet is a lack of knowledge, which is going to be my chief concern. If I get the full-time position, I will certainly hold my employees accountable for an in-depth knowledge of what they are selling because if we 1) are unable to answer a question about one of our products we look stupid and 2) if a customer asks two associates who give two separate answers, we look even worse.

The second big thing I'm thinking is tournaments. I'm not sure if Best Buy corporate would even allow a thing like this, but tournaments would really help get some traffic in the store and make the store a more frequent visit for the local gaming community.

So, what do you guys think we should change? Any input would be greatly appreciated and may even get implemented at my Best Buy and, if we're lucky, Best Buys nationwide.

Thanks
King Hippo

Amazon.com

Gamestop

Why would you ever stop into a best buy for games?

Not to be a douche, but most people on here stay away from Best Buy.

A tournament however would even interest me, it would definitely be something no other company does, but then again, they're all mostly gone now.

A tournement at best buy using their big nice projectors and TV's would be Godly.

You should tell them about how it would massivly jump their reputation from people like us if they would have tournements. All their products would be priced to actually reasonable levels just for the duration of the tourny, and after the tourny, it would go back to normal levels.

Geek Squad needs to stop ripping people off..that's what will get people in the store. Charging obscene amounts just to run a "recovery" disc they could have run at home doesn't help anyone..and people in the know have since moved on from Best Buy due to said practices.

Just tell them you want to re market Geek Squad and Best Buy Gaming Department as friendly, knowledgeable, and honest..THAT would be fresh at Best Buy..

BTW, where is this in New York tongue.gif I want to be a part of the first Geek Squad that isn't terrible biggrin.gif

A large chain store like Best Buy is typically not looking for "new and fresh" ideas. As a manager you'll be expected to enforce and follow standard procedures and generally follow the rules that are already set.

I would more so put forth the effort into showing your leadership skills and ability to handle yourself in a retail establishment. I cannot imagine they would hire you because you want to change the business model that they already have in place.

*edit* You want to show previous experience in maintaining a high or mid-level leadership position, and what you actually did as a leader to reinforce the policies to the sales staff. Also, show proof of how your skills maintained a quantifiable level of performance. That being your quarterly sales were consistently at or above required levels, customer and associate satisfaction and performance was always above average, etc..

Many retail managers are weary of a potential new hire (looking at any position) who wants to come in and immediately change things. You want to show initiative and willingness to bring better things to your company, but immediately bringing up "new" ideas is not always a good thing.

I refuse to shop at a store that charges 20+$ for 10 feet of CAT6 cable. Best Buy rips off its customers that do not know any better.

Sad, but true.

The biggest thing would be to actually train Geek Squad employees, not just teach them basic diagnostic skills, you know things people with half a brain could just google and get better free answers for.
