Suggestions:

-Do not let a non-pcgamer advise customers on PC requirement/hardware selection issues.

-Advisors shouldn't recommend a game they have not played.

-Stop charging for console updates, it makes you look so untrustworthy. Stop exploiting the stupidity of a few customers on this. Tell them that any updates needed are on the game disc and put a guide on your company site so that you can offer them a link. Sure you don't sell the service, but it will impress the customer on a number of levels earning more sales... probably more sales of games, consoles and TVs... maybe some PC component sales too.

-PC demo section: Take your current gaming laptop/desktop offerings and throw 2-3 games on them. You show off the hardware and the games. As an extra, take one of your low-end desktops have geeksquad throw a decent cheap PSU and midrange GPU something ~$250 total +labor. You will be pushing PC games, low-end desktops, PC components and geeksquad services all in one go.

I've worked at a Best buy, and worked at the same store for 3 years.

I started out in the Computer department thinking I could make a difference knowing a lot about computers (More then your average Best buy computer "specialist") oh how I was wrong. From there I went onto be the Computers full time associate, again thinking I could make a difference.

long story short, I went from Part time computers when I started to Business Technology Professorial (Management/big corporate sales) all the while trying to make changes and suggesting new things to managers or higher ups, to only have what I suggest either thrown in the trash, or only re-suggested by managers two or three months later and given no credit.

My suggestion to the OP is try and get the FT/Sup position, and do whatever your manager says, yes, try and make some changes, but small ones, not big ones like you've suggested.

I can tell you right now, no Manager will agree to a tourny in a Best Buy store, the only thing I can imagine you getting is getting a hold of the Microsoft gaming or Sony gaming reps and see if they can bring in the gaming semi-trailers that float around (We have both at my store) and then maybe, your GM will allow it.

To the Op-

Asking a group of people, like the OCN community, who likely have all saved there family members a wallet full of money by doing the repairs to their computers instead of letting them take them to BB's Geek Squad, you just open up the flame doors. Its like asking a Nissan fan why Toyota is better than Nissan.

I will make what I think is a useful contribution though:

Don't Compare your store to anythingBest Buy has received a horrible reputation among computer savvy folks from its eagerness to exploit the common Fred and Betty on a daily basis. They have gone as far as to convince consumers that they get "A-tier" products from the manufactures and places like Fry's, Microcenter and other competing electronics suppliers get "B-tier" products, that even though they may have the same model number are somehow inferior to there products (True story, Plano, TX Best Buy on Saturday-wish I would have been smooth enough to catch it on video.) I have heard this type of banter many times before witnessing it myself.

Appeal to the PC Gamers, and those who utilize PC's for greater purposes than photo shop, facebook and Office. We are looking for hardware, and games, but even more so, some people in a brick and mortar that know what the heck the difference between FSB and Reference Clock is, or why DDR3 1333 is considered generic ram vs ddr3 1600. Also connect with Hardware and software manufacturers and have them bring their promotional items to the store on weekends and holidays or even host events. Why not have a dress like "your favorite video game character" day on the release of some major games plus some kind of store wide event demoing the product. EVGA has this massive truck with a killer sound system and computers built around to show off their hardware. Bring them in. Do the same with other companies. I like to go see the demo's when they are at Fry's. Reach this group of people: and

Drop the prices of the Geek squad, and you may be able to save face. My family ships me there computers from another state because the sting of there last Geeksquad visits.

Offer a Performance Geek package - Consult people for free about hardware, software and other things that will best fit there budget, space and desires. Most people don't know what they want. Ever been into someone's Apartment with a 52 inch lcd that you cannot even see because you cannot get far enough away to see the whole screen without eye scrolling?

Offer a simple solution to a complicated problem Many companies offer mail in rebates, which at best are pain in the @$$, and at worse make the purchases not worth it. Engage in this and give the end user the rebated price at the register and file the rebate yourself. You would be the first brick and mortar that offered that kind of service and I think it would catch on.

Get the HR department involved. Best Buy seems to hire mainly people with little or no college education to work the floor and field sales. There is no problem with this, considering what this group of people is willing to work for $. Apparently the sales structure is intended for the product to sell itself rather than the flunky employee. That being said, tell the flipping employees to shut their pie holes! They talk and often it is out on a marketing limb and the sales associate is B.S.ing through the mental notes they took at the monthly workshop they went to about the products they sell. "It is best to keep your mouth shut, than to open it and let everyone know you are an idiot." A better inventory of Employee assets would be a huge sales booster, because you could staff a tier 2 or 3 person to back up the tier 1 flunkies and make the company look alot more credible.

I honestly don't feel that bad when Geek Squad rips people off. It's their own fault for not learning some basic computer stuff. Heck most of the stuff I learned was either from trial and error, Google, or this forum (All free sources mind you).

So if you buy a PS3 and don't know how to update it....that's a you problem for not being an intelligent consumer and you deserve to get burned.

Basically what everyone else said....I mean prices are ridiculous and the ppl at the one I'm near try to sell the products so hard....I give them an A for effort, F for knowledge. Cuz yea "i know PSUs are important" but I'd u can't give me detailed info without looking at the box? I'll pass lol. And that telling me a GTX 460 was "top of the line and future proof" ROFL (not dissing it or anything but we know the 580 hehe). And generally being passed back and forth for info sucks. A wider range of supplies would be good too....but given best buy is geared towards general consumers I doubt it'll happen.
A tournament would be great for gamers as well as a great way to showcase diff products tho.
