Paranoid for no reason?

Thread Starter
So after doing some reading around im getting kinda concerned that my psu is garbage and that it wont run what im about to build...Am i being paranoid for no reason?

so im building a new computer here in the next couple weeks...just waiting for parts...but im running a brand new Antec Earthwatts 500D Green thats maybe got ~50 hours on it and ive used at least 3 different psu calculators and all have my system right in the mid 300 to low 400 watt range...so im going to ask you all if i can run this with no issues at all...right now i cant afford to upgrade the psu and thats why im asking

parts list:

i5-2500k
Asus P8P67
2x4gb G.skill sniper 1.5v Ram
Corsair H60 closed loop water cooler
ATI HD5670 (dont judge me lol)
6 case fans
SunbeamTech Rheosmart 6
Generic Card reader

now some notes...i would like to OC the i5 to at least 4.5ghz and for it to be stable...i plan on replacing the video card at a later date with something like a HD6790 or HD6850 as i only really play MMO's and a few other pc games

so am i good to go as i stand? Could i even run the HD6850 with it if i were to upgrade sooner?

Personally I think that is a little sketchy but it should be able to handle everything STOCK. As for your overclocking... I think you should maybe upgrade. Don't just go on my word though. Others are bound to post what they think too. hah.

That PSU will be plenty for it as is, and fine with a Radeon 6850.

Currant build= safe. OC'ing the 2500k should be easy, depending on your chip you might not even have to increase voltage (which would increase power drain). just change the multiplier.

HOWEVER buying a PSU with some headroom is always good idea. would be quitier. As it wouln't stress it out as much, so the fan wouldn't have to spin as fast. Thats what i am doing in my rig. but also good for future proofing.

The Antec Earthwatts Green 500W is a fine power supply with decent performance and a very good reliability record and build quality, built by Delta Electronics. It's not my top pick for the price, but it's definitely a very solid power supply and enough to power your system with Crossfire 5670s.

Incidentally, your system pulls like 250W.

Well that put my mind at ease a little more...Thanks!

when i originally bought it, i was only planning on running my current build of a q6600 and 6gb of ddr2 ram with an ati hd4650....nothing extreme and i knew pretty much any 500w psu could run that without any issues....but after doing a ton of research and just saying "screw it" i went out and put together a new build without really even considering my EW 500D may not be up to the task of an OC'ed 2500k and all the new fangal stuff thats currently out...but its good to know that my system will only pull 250w plus i guess whatever usb and what not i have running

I appreciate everyones input on the matter...i would love to go out and buy a nice 650w corsair or something...but i sorta hit my limit with what i just bought and need to gain back some cash...which is why im rocking an older gpu and my 500D

With an overclocked i5-2500k (say 110W for the high side of a reasonable overclock, depending on voltage/frequency) and a HD 6850 (another 110W or so stock) and the rest of a typical computer (not going to be more than 80W unless you've got lots and lots of fans at high speeds and/or HDDs), a logical choice on the lower end would be a...Earthwatts Green 380D. Not sure why you ditched the 500D.

If you want to spend up to budget, the best thing you could buy is something like a Antec TruePower New 650W for $80:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021

It's pretty comparable to the TX650 V2, except it's partially modular, actually has 4 PCI-E power connectors, and is a little cheaper. Both are made by Seasonic, though the TPN is a somewhat custom design it seems. That's total overkill even for Crossfire HD 6850 though.
