How much does lapping help?

Thread Starter
So I've been considering lapping my heat sink and CPU but how much does it really help? I have a Tuniq 120 Tower Extreme and an AMD Phenom II X4 965. Right now using FanSpeed I'm running near silent (800-1000 RPMs) at 50C under full load (39C with everything at 100%) and idling around 28C (dependent on ambient). I'm not overclocking but this is OCN so I'm interested in lapping anyways.

Apparently lapping can lower temps by 25c at most.
I would never do it to my CPU though...

more like 10C max (unless stuff is really really uneven)

I am going to do my i7 real soon, mostly because the warranty is almost up.

10c? 25c? I want to call BS

I thought the most was around 5c

25C? That seems a bit unreasonable. I'd be running below ambient if that was possible.

EDIT: Warranties are for *******. THIS... IS... OCN! When have we been worried about warranties?

25c is if your cpu and heatsink have cracks and chunks missing. Your ihs would have to be in terrible shape to see dropss like that. But lapping does help none the less. Cant say for sure what kind of gains you will get because results vary from chip to chip. But you should see a worthwhile drop in temps.

Be warned though, lapping your cpu VOIDS THE WARRANTY
Now with that said, I dont hear too many stories of people having chips die on them. So you should probably be alright. Lapping might also effect the sale price of the cpu if you ever intend to sell it in the future; wether it increases or decreases the value, i dunno. Lot of people like warranties, but alot of people like shiny objects, like a nice lapped and polished cpu.

anyway, have fun doing this. And research before doing.

It really depends on the cooler, cpu, voltage, surface, tim, and a bunch of other things.

Some say lapping does nothing and is unproven while others swear by it.

I lapped both my H50 and i5 and saw about 5 degrees difference. The core temps also evened out, they are all within about 2 degrees of each other instead of a 5-6 degree difference.

That's if you get a funky one that's got a bit of a dip in the middle or something.

Only time I would consider lapping is if my warranty was up or I had terrible temp's. Before you consider it though I would check the IHS with a precision ruler or something and see if it's uneven or not.
