hard to say exactly bc I dont know what brand of pc it is or what form factor the case is some parts may be good but its hard to say exactly. some may also be outdated to where they are worthless.

I don't know off by heart but it's a Dell I think xps 120
post #23 of 39
yea the problem with dell is they are junk. lol. The case prob not reuseable, mobo and power supply not useable, the memory may be good and the cdrom and hard drive may be good. the problem with the dell mother boards and dell power supplys is that they have switched two of the power connector pins and if you try to use them on a nondell pc it usually frys it.

Then a new case I would assume. Anything I could keep, I would. Saves some change

Must the OS and monitor be required in $300?
If so that kills it, your best hope would be to look at Craigslist

Tigerdirect combo deals are TERRIBLE, never buy them. I have huge doubt as to that ECS mobo being safely capable of running a 125W. You'll also be bottlenecked by single channel memory and the power supply does not look good.

Build coming shortly...

Okay, my suggestion:
Athlon II x2 250 - $61 shipped
BIOSTAR N68S3+ - $40 shipped
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2GB DDR3-1600 - $40 shipped [cheapest on market] <<hurry, deal on this ends very soon!
PNY 9800GT Green Edition - $55 + $7 shipping

- $35 shipped [amazon]
Antec BP430 - $35 shipped after promo/$20 AR
Samsung F3 500GB [Recertified] - $29 + $7 shipping
$295 + shipping
The rebate on the Antec PSU should get you some $20 back in around 6 weeks and you'll have an excellent ~$280 PC

The shipping costs may put it slightly above $300 (Newegg combines shipping costs on multiple items where the shipping has cost) but I say it's close enough, and GREAT build for price

The Athlon II x2 will outperform or perform the same as a Phenom x4 in most apps as long as the clock speed has a big enough advantage (3Ghz vs 2.4Ghz; overclock this to some 3.5Ghz and you win), while doing so at half the TDP. In gaming the clock speed will make it shine a lot. 4GB of DDR3 is the way to go for nice and fast multitasking ability, and this 1600Mhz kit is a good deal right now. The 9800GT Green Edition is a decent card with not a huge power requirement (no 6-pin PCI-E connector), and can actually be overclocked pretty decently. The NZXT Gamma is a GREAT case for price lately. Comes with decent 120MM fan setup, black interior, bottom PSU mounting, plenty of space, good cable management, great airflow & expandability. The Antec PSU is of good quality for this build and will be able to hold it together. The Samsung F3 hard drive is very fast, faster than your average 7200RPM.

I hope I'm not missing anything

That's an impressive list for $300. Nice job.

The NZXT GAMMA & Antec BP430 deals which I found earlier helped a lot today's G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 shellshocker is a great saver too.

I was going to suggest a 5670 but happened to find this 9800GT Green which is equal/better performance, for somewhat cheaper. if I went for a 5670 it would've gone over budget and I would have to revert to a cheaper and inferior Rosewill mATX case + included PSU (which I'm not sure if I can trust if the system has a GPU of sorts in it), to stay within. Though 5670 has DX11, I'm pretty sure DX11 would be fairly useless on such build as features like tesselation would dumb everything down to the point where DX11 is not playable anymore. Overall I had to cut a few corners but I think the result is pretty good

This would get you started, I would think. You could replace the GPUs for under $100 and add some more RAM.

HD4870$55

Gskill RAM, 2GB$40
