K8 architecture, so yeah...it tops out around 3.0-3.2GHz.

Nothing WRONG with them though. I never owned one personally, but I loved the heck out of Socket 939 K8 duallies. Same thing.
Yeah I actually skipped that generation of rig building. I went strait from an Athlon 64 4000+ socket 939 with a XTX1900x to an Athlon II X2 250 and an HD 4770. Was incognito for about 4 years so I know nothing about Phenom I's except from what I see in the X3 my GF is using that I bought on Ebay for 40 bucks shipped. Will probably find her a Rana series chip instead.

also the memory controller was different on the Phenom vs K8 duals. It was actually worse which is why it has problems overclocking.

couldn't get 3.0ghz - but I got 2.8ghz on a phenom 9750, and I am not that good an overclocker. I used a Corsair A50 for cooling

Why is Althon 2 Better than phenom 1?

What althon 2 for 35 bucks? Doesn't the 9750 have at least 2 more cores and L3 cache?

Aren't more games supporting quad now?

Look at that terribleness:
-125W Phenom x4 processor at just 2.4Ghz (seriously at the same price an OC'ed Athlon II x2 would mostly outperform it at half the TDP)
-I have huge doubt as to that motherboard safely supporting a 125W TDP processor due to 3+1 power phase and ECS branding
-Single channel memory will bottleneck a lot
-There is absolutely no way I am trusting whatever PSU is in that case for such a build

DIY COMBOS ARE NOT DEALS

Tigerdirect combo price: $213, $200 only after rebate
My competing suggestion:
As previously mentioned, Athlon II X2 can be had on OCN marketplace for 35-40 bucks shipped.
BIOSTAR A880G+ - $55 shipped (fully HD capable graphics)
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2GB DDR3-1600 - $40 shipped [1600Mhz dual channel goodness and cheapest on market] <<hurry, deal on this ends very soon!
Rosewill mATX case + PSU - $45 shipped after promo [see link]
Samsung F3 500GB [Recertified] - $29 + shipping
$209 + shipping

Looks like I win again today. Something with decent HD capable graphics, 4GB of DDR3 (1600Mhz because it happens to be a good price), a PSU I can trust at least a lot more than whatever TigerDirect has to offer (just don't try using it with more than iGPU), and a significantly faster HDD. All in the same price point.

I think what he meant was that this combo deal isn't really a deal because of the cheapest parts you can find

It's a trend
Companies put together these deals to get rid of parts they can't sell with other items.... in a way that rips you off, because there are always better items available when it comes to both price and quality.

These deals are meant for the lazy people with no sense of deal-finding. Me, I think differently and work quickly; there's been not a single combo deal I have not been able to beat with my own suggestion of individual parts, just yet. The result is better deals for others - and as my deal-finding ability gets better, I'm able to find better deals for myself too! It just takes a bit of time to get a better price but depending on who you are (I'm a jobless secondary student with a lot of parts need right now for various reasons) it can be really worth it Some months ago I built an Athlon II x4/785G/4GB DDR2/500GB HDD/low profile case/quality Antec 80+ PSU PC for my dad (under a limited $300 budget) to replace his aging office build, all these cost less than $300, but it took a lot of scavenging in various places and if you may say so, "cheating" (took advantage of a vacation to San Francisco to visit a nearby Microcenter and grab the x4 + a free mobo)

1.the motherboard is now 40 shipped now
2.that Rosewill case+PSU deal isn't as good of a deal compared to the Meritline one I posted, and not quite as sexy either
3.F3 is out of stock

Otherwise I like, especially the GSkill Ripjaws for 40 shipped
