HOME SERVER options???

Thread Starter
I am considering building a home server to back up files, os, rip dvds and blu rays. Use it as a terminal as well.

This is my first rodeo so I am un sure as to how much processing power and ram and things of that natrure I will need.

Im thinking ill go with a quad core AMD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103921

ASRock mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157226

4gb ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148352

Faster master drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145304

Multiple slave drives:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145475

Should cost less than $350

Ive herd that windows home server is a good os, but only supports 4 gb ram. Is this enough? Again I dont really know anything so insight would be helpful.

If you are a student you can get windows server 2008 rc2 for free if you have a edu email.

Everything looks decent enough, but i do recommend a samsung spinpoint f3 instead of hitachi for the OS.

the other drives are fine, i dont use hitachi but some swear by them, most will recommend you samsung f4's of WD green for storage HDD.

The motherboard is outdated and i suggest a more current chipset if you plan to stream anything that is offloaded to the igfx.

If it is purely for a file server then forget the above mention.

cpu is fine,

ram you might be able to find some cheap sets here on the for sale section of the forum.

Anyone one of the drives you linked should be fine. I have been running each of those in my WHS for 2-3 yrs.

As for ram. I have had 2Gb in it since day one and not set backs for what I do. If you can find 4gb for cheap , get it . It will not hurt anything. My cpu is a e3300. Thing has been rock solid for streaming to multiple pc's will running torrents. Not a hiccup.

A quad will be overkill for a server at home but again if you can find it cheap.....

I have 3 samsung and 1 hiatchi in my home server, and hitachi is always 10 degrees C warmer than the samsungs. I Don't like it, just a word of advice, but maybe consider a different HD manufacturer.

By ripping dvd and bluray do you mean 1:1 copy or encoding them? The P3 probably uses just as much power and heat as a modern day quad :x. In my home server my samsungs are a few degrees cooler than my WD drives.
If you are doing 1:1 rips use your p3 or get a dual core, if you are going to encode i would suggest getting a dual core and just encoding on your desktop overnight or while at work/school. I pay my own bills and like to see my electrical bill drop smile.gif.

Absolutely! Consider the usage it will have. If you're only going to be using it for back-ups, streaming to one computer, or downloading torrents, yea it'll work but it won't be quick.

People may complain about its power usage but the difference in cost to run between a P3 and a dual core would be about $3 a month. Taking it a long time to get a return on your money. If you get a new dualcore, you'd need a new mobo to go with it. $130 (for hardware) divided by $3/month = 40 months until it's cost effective.

Bring that machine out of the closet, throw XP on it and use it, imo. If you have an IDE - SATA adapter you can get plenty of storage that way. Otherwise they do still sell 500 gig IDE drives.

OC it if you must, but I wouldn't. It will only hurt reliability and will make it more expensive to run when you really shouldn't need to OC it

I built it, It is currently running WHS. But I have emerging reservations about this platform as I become more familiar with it.

I finally decided on these components:
ASRock 880gm-le mobo
AMD Athlon x4 2.8
4gb ram
1tb 7200 rpm main drive
2tb 5900 rpm slave drive
