I find the aloof coldness of Tolkein's elves to be pretty stale. Then again, I've not read the books so I probably shouldn't judge from the film series alone. They just seemed too distant to associate with.
Here, the Scoia'tael maintain a sense of noblesse oblige akin to US East coast Native Americans whose lands were seized by Europeans back in the day. They're fighting a losing cause, yet they reject that and instead decide to resist in the only way they can.
