LGA1155 MB Advice - SATA 6GB Concerns

Thread Starter

Hello all,

Years back I built several systems and those were in the PENTIUM and DURON days, so its been a while.

I'd like a recommendation on the best MB for my setup, my budget is $300-$375 shipped.

I'm building a system based on the i7/2600K CPU. It will be my primary workstation for a bit of graphics work, and some occasional gaming. Overclocking it to the max, while maintaining a stable system.

I've been collecting components to complete the build, I realize it might have been more prudent to have bought the MB first and built around it, however, as it turns out I've collected everything else and delayed the MD based on some rumor/suggestions that I should wait for the Z68 chipset?? After reading up on that I'm not too certain I should wait.

Anywho, here is what I have purchased thus far:

1. Intel i7/2600K
2. OCZ VERTEX 3 240G SSD
3. Corsair (3x4GB) 12GB 2000MHz DDR3 Vengeance Blu 16 GB PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin RAM (First RAM RMA'ed changed to recommended - Thanks)

4. Corsair H70 cooler
5. Corsair T600 Case
6. 2ea. EVGA 01G-P3-1372-TR GeForce GTX 460 in SLI
7. 3ea.

LCD's
8. LG 10X SATA Blu-ray Drive (WH10LS30K)
9. Corsair HX850W Power Supply.
10. Windows 64-bit Ultimate.

So, I have, I believe, two things left to buy. A LGA1155 Motherboard and a SATA 3 Hard Drive.

I've been looking at the ASUS offerings, and narrowed them down to these two:

ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0)
or the
ASUS ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME (REV 3.0)

Factors in favoring these two -

4ea. SATA 6.0GBs connections and not via the Marvel 9210 controller - as I've read somewhere that the 9120 has problems with OCZ SSD.
Bluetooth included.
USB 3.0 support.

So in summary:

1. Am I missing some better MB solutions?
2. If not, of these two MB boards will one support the SLI video better?
3. Will I require a "SLI Bridge" or do they typically come with the MB?
4. Any potential problems I'm over-looking?

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

I recently helped my friend finish a Sandy Bridge build, and he got the Maximus IV Extreme. A very nice board, comes with all the ports you need. As for USB 3.0 connectivity, the Maximus IV extreme has more than enough. It includes a bluetooth module. And it should come with an SLI bridge, although I think it only came with a 2-way SLI bridge, flexible. I don't think there are any other motherboards that can beat the M4E in terms of what you get, but it's pretty expensive. The p67 chipset comes with onboard SATA III ports, but only two. The other two are powered by the marvel controller.

I don't know about the p8p67 deluxe but most here will say it's a great board. Maybe the GA-P67A-UD7. It's cheaper than the M4E but I don't know about bluetooth connectivity.

Since you're getting three screens, you might want to get a more powerful graphics card with more VRAM.

Also, the RAM is triple channel, while the p67 chipset is dual channel. This will work better for your system.

Good luck with your build!

EDIT: Reread your first post, you already got everything above If you can, you should return that RAM and get dual-channel memory.

Both of these boards have 4 Sata 6Gbs ports.
in both cases 2 are native P67 ports.
The Deluxe provides 2 more via Marvel 9128 controller
The Maximus provides 2 more via Marvel 9182 controller.

Both will come with SLI bridge included. The Maximus will support 3xSLI which deluxe will not. So you have more SLI options with that.

Thanks so much for the information...I guess I screwed up on the RAM purchase. I was thinking I'd like a bit more than 8GB. Can I run QUAD CHANNEL Ram, such as:
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
or
G.SKILL Ripjaws X + Turbulence II Series 16GB
or
should I go for only the DUAL 8GB RAM?

Either one really. If you're overclocking, I've heard that populating all four slots may affect your overclock, although it may only be for multiplier-locked processors. You'll have to search around and ask about that. Either one should be fine really, but first figure out how your overclock will be affected, if at all. Cheers!

EDIT: looking from here it shouldn't be a problem. But double checking from other's won't hurt.

Just so you know 4x4gb doesnt mean quad. Its 4 sticks of dual channel. For boards with 4 memory slots.

Although we will see quad channel ram being sold exactly like this when socket 2011 is out.
