GTX 480 still worth picking up?

Thread Starter
I was planning on picking up a GTX 570, but I hear a lot of them have issues with the VRMs blowing up so I don't think I want to risk that.

I hear the 570 is a bit faster than the 480, but I can get the 480 for around the same price.

Does the 480 have any issues I should know about, besides the heat? That doesn't bother me because I've had my 470 for awhile now and it hasn't bothered me yet.

Btw, this isn't to upgrade from my 470. The 480 will be for a different build.

How much slower is the 480 than the 570?

Still worth picking up?

Specs for the build:

NZXT Phantom
i5 2500K
Corsair H70 CPU cooler
4GB RAM
Corsair HX750

I had a 570 just before this 480.

They both get the same kind of scores on 3dmark11 and Vantage. I traded my friend my 570 that did 900core with 1.050v and it only lasted him one day.

I had it for a few months with no issues. The 480 is the one go with, way more robust if you ask me.

I'm thinking of picking up the EVGA version of the card.

It doesn't have any common issues with it, right?

I'm just super cautious now that I've seen pictures of the 570's VRMs all melted =/

You are good to go. I have an eVGA 480 water cooled with 1.2v pumping through it for the past month now, no issues.

Better performance ? No offense, but use benchmarks on Google.

Afaik, they perform about the same, with the GTX 570 leading a small tad.
The GTX 570 uses lesser power and doesn't get as hot. I'm not sure about the noise.

The GTX 480 gets hot and consumes a great load of power, but has 256MB more GDDR5 RAM.

If you can find the GTX 480 considerably cheaper, I'd go for that one. But be aware of the heat. 90-95C at load is common. Depends on your case and fans

I have never tried the 570. I have an EVGA superclocked 480 card and the only thing I hate about it is the heat that comes out of this card...I can go up to 80 degrees and even 85 on certain games while gaming with the fan set at 85%.

Oh yes, get it!

Get an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus with 004 mounting kit to go with it. Temps won't go over 61.º C when gaming with 99% GPU usage.

The stock cooler is insufficient. Personally I didn't feel comfortable using the card with the stock cooler. I had a fan on the case side panel blowing air onto it and got 81.º C while gaming, it would probably be a bit hotter if I had the CPU overclocked a bit more like I have now that enables the system to use the GPU better.

As to the GTX570, yes, it has less VRM's, a narrower memory bus, less VRAM (at 1680x1050 with 4x AA even Crysis touches the Max VRAM the GTX570 has, not to mention Metro 2033 or GTA IV and future games).

The GTX480 with a good cooler is the best bet for the future. Just make sure to get the AXP and you'll have a great card. 35.º C at idle, 61.º C during load in games
