Did I just buy a faulty Caviar Black or what?

Hi, my 6 years old hdd failed yesterday and I was forced to buy another one to use my computer. I went to the nearest shop and bought 640 GB Caviar Black SATA 6Gbps. My motherboard is still with SATA 3Gbps, but they told me there won't be any problem and will function normal just without maxing the transfer speed. However the guy gave me the one that was on the glass-case and mentioned that they needed the disk for some test while it is still unused. I was fine with that, because it had 5 years warranty and knew I could change it if something's wrong. Later when I went home, installed the Windows. First thing I noticed was that it took me unusual long. Like 70 mins, while on the old HDD it was going for no longer than 30. Now when I start the computer it is supper laggy. It's taking like 10 or 15 sec just to open the local disk C and the windows benchmark thing cannot be finished due to the very long time it takes. It just gives fail. I also checked the operating temperatures with SpeedFan and it was staying stable at ~30 degrees. I'm having like 250mm fan just in front of the HDDs so that's probably not the problem. Also the LED is always showing that it is under usage. But on the other hand the windows start-up time is normal. Seems like the first minute when I turn it on is working a little bit faster until it heats up. Could the problem be in my machine or it is just a faulty HDD? I just wanted to know, because I'm afraid that when go there, it's gonna work normally on their test PC.
Thanks for the time!

Sounds like it's probably bad drive. I hope they gave you a good discount on the display model! Run a tool that will display SMART status, like GSmartControl, or WD's own utility. That will tell you more about what may be happening with the drive. Probably you will need to RMA it.

Like error10 said, check the SMART status of the drive and even do a long self-test on the drive if you can. If you have no important data on the drive, it might also be worth it to do a full format and have the drive controller remap any bad blocks it finds.

I think the Windows event viewer will throw out errors if it sees hdd errors, but I could be wrong.
