4 DIMM Slots, fill them all?

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I think I saw someone on the OCN suggesting to someone who had 2 DIMM slots filled that he/she should just stick with those two.

I have a similar setup, a P67 board with 4 DIMM slots total, 2 currently occupied with G.SKILL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600mhz (PC3 12800) OCed to 1866mhz with 8-9-8-24-1T timings. My question is, if I want to upgrade to 8GB, is it optimal to just fill the remaining two DIMM slots with another set of my current RAM, or to toss my current RAM and get 2x 4GB sticks?

And if the initial suggestion is correct (stick with 2 sticks of RAM rather than 4) then can someone please explain to me why this is?

Thanks in advance!

4x sticks is quoted to potentially limit your overclocking potential due to possible heightened stress on the IMC.

I would assume it won't be a problem with Sandy Bridge though because RAM does not interfere with CPU overclocking.

With older platforms, increasing the FSB or Base Clock would raise the RAM speeds, and if you have 4 sticks, the NorthBridge would require more voltage than with if you just had 2 sticks.

But in theory, it would be more Optimal to just stick with 2 modules of RAM.

I run 4 sticks of 1GB RAM , and I have no problems whatsoever, even at 4Ghz.

I run four sticks...it didn't affect my OC on my current rig, but it has on my machines in the past.

Two is probably lighter/easier for the system to deal with, but not to the extent of throwing your current RAM away to do so.

It seems that 4GB is plenty, it hasn't let me down yet. How does my Memory benchmark look?

The 4 DIMM issue is mainly an AMD issue that can resolved with a bump on the CPU-NB voltage.

Thanks, B NEGATIVE.

Can anyone interpret the Memory benchmark above? I have no idea if it's good or bad...
