so im re-thinking what i need to buy

Thread Starter
so i really appreciate all the advice i get here photo wise.

i have a list of needs and wants obviously and i know i need to invest in a grip. i want a 135L but have a feeling like once i get it that it might get neglected because ill be shooting sports with a 70-200 that i think my athletics department is buying me.

so i am looking to go ahead and upgrade to a 50 1.4 for occasional portraits and event photos on campus and it will be my basketball lens. is this a smart upgrade? i know that i also am in need of a fast wide lens which im going to try to get the school to buy me but i think a 17-55 would be smart unless there is a nice fast wide prime that is not over $1k although if i had the money i think i would go with the 24L but i dont

so like if thats too much to read heres what im looking at:

next purchases:
50 1.4 & grip to go with a possible 70-200 and 1.4X that will be loaned to me

wish list:
24L or equivalent good quality fast wide
135L
5DmkII (just dreaming on that lol)

after all that the question of the day is do you guys think i have my priorities straight with the gear i am getting or should i continue to think it over more?

According your sig you already have a 50 f/1.8. I don't see the point of getting the 1.4 if you already own the not shabby at all nifty 50. If you plan on sticking with APS-C for a while then I would definitely get the 17-55.

I would put the grip at the end of your wishlist just because it's not as limiting to not have a grip than it is to be missing a lens that covers an important focal length.

Do you find that you are shooting so much in one outing that you're swapping batteries? Or do you get everything in on just one? I ask because the grip is something that might be able to wait if your budget is that tight. The 7D has an approximate 800 shot capacity on a single battery charge. When I owned it, I got by with one battery, the life was that good.

As for lenses, I'm not sure why you would want the 135L. It's very long on a crop sensor and the 85/1.8 is a better fit. And if you plan on using it for sports, it's redundant along side the 70-200.

And I always used and loved the 50mm focal length on a crop sensor. Depends on what you shoot with I suppose. You might consider the Sigma 30/1.4 instead, which could serve as an alternative to both the 50/1.4 and 24L.

Or, you could get just the 17-55/2.8 and use that with the 70-200. The 17-55 is an amazing lens paired with the 7D.

Good advice normally, but he said he plans on shooting basketball with the 50/1.4. The 50/1.4 will AF much better in low-lit sporting events.

now with batteries being only $100 i could just get a second battery. my reason for the grip is really that i will find myself getting into a situation where im taking lots of photos because i may cover an event on campus and then a game that night. or i may cover multiple games and events over the course of 2-3 days which in the past would last me but now that i may be at the mercy of covering more events than normal and covering more sports as well that i might fall victim to not having the time to charge the battery when needed. might be smarter to get the extra battery since i dont need the grip THAT bad as far as portrait shooting goes i dont extreme trouble with my horizons that cant be fixed in post

i really want the 135 just because i prefer primes more when i have the choice and would like to have a nice prime kit of a wide, 50, and tele. but the crop camera makes the prime kit different but i do see a FF in the future at some point when i begin more video work with my own equipment.

That's how I've rolled. I have two batteries now for my 5DII (uses the same battery as the 7D), but I rarely have to swap them out.

I do actually want a grip some day myself, but it's always been a lower priority as I've never had any significant issues shooting in portrait mode (nor with battery life). The grip definitely makes it easier though.

And as for uneven horizons, use the grid overlay and/or electronic level on the 7D! I really wish my 5DII had those features.

And I just noticed that you wanted to upgrade to the 5DII some day. Why, if you're shooting mostly sports? If you see yourself being a big sports shooter in the future, something like a 1D Mark IV/Mark III would be more ideal (or just keep your 7D as it's a very competent sports shooter).

well i actually am more talented as a videographer although im not getting much work lately. i kinda got lucky on campus with my sports photos being as good as they are considering im shooting with what i have and they turn out capturing pretty good action minus not having the reach needed to shoot soccer ideally. and i originally want to get a 1dmk4 to pair with my 7d for video because together they make a great pair but money is holding me back right now but if i make great money doing work on campus as sports photog and video producer as well as recently appointed social coordinator for on-campus events i could see a 1dmk4 in my future and i would be able to properly purchase glass to suit my needs because my video needs can be met with the same glass that i shoot sports with.

right now my biggest hurdles are just making money to get the equipment which im hoping this sports gig will help me out

-Grip
-85mm f/1.8 (thank me later, it's godly on a crop for indoor sports)
-70-200 f/2.8 (skip IS if budget is low)

50mm on a crop is.... interesting. I rarely use mine, and at current prices the f/1.4 USM is a waste of money.

True dat, retail prices are high, and I'm finding that it's also elevating used prices. I recently sold my 50/1.4 for $300 the same day I posted it and also sold my 70-200/4 IS for an insanely high price compared to what they sold used in previous years.

Yep, the photo market is balls right now -- 2011 is going to be a good year to enjoy what you already own.

most bodies have gone up in price, instead of mine... I wonder if that's a sign.
