so im re-thinking what i need to buy - Page 2

i like the idea of the 85 but on my home court i dont have the space to capture a lot of action under the hoop, we have a very cramped gym. i can use the 85 on one side but not the other. so the 50 works great for me and it would be even better if it was like a 40 lol but i dont always care about having the entire player in the shot so im ok with feet getting cropped on occasion. now if i used the 17-55 i would have no worry about getting everything but with the 2.8 i would have to go higher ISO most likely up past 3000, i can shoot at f2 1/500 ISO 2500 and get great shots on the 50 1.8 but with the low light comes some focus issues as its not getting in focus fast enough at times and sometimes just misses it.

i am going to go and talk to the director of athletics at my school tomorrow and get him to talk over my job since he has already expressed great interest in me shooting sports for him and talks about what he needs to buy me to get shots for sports like golf. and he also wants me to produce weekly video spots for each sport as well as improving out live internet stream of basketball. i ahve met with him 3 times now but we have not made it official just because he has been busy earlier, but now hes not so im going to get him to approve the gear i know i need for both jobs. i wish he would buy me whatever i want but i doubt it very much although i would go nuts if he said get whatever i need

Sounds like the 17-55 really fits the bill IMO.

yea it does. if athletics doesnt get it for me then ill have to pass on the 50 1.4 to get the 17-55 because if i do shoot for money i want to make sure i have the ability to get solid captures for basketball

Since a lot seems to depend on your choice, I would rent the 17-55 first, and ideally the 85/1.8 and or 50/1.4.

Then why does the OP say you want a 135L/70-200L?

If you don't mind some random dudes opinion:

Battery grip is nice but really not needed unless you are taking shots like a maniac at an all day event.

I would not buy a 70-200 without IS for Sport photography.

As previously mentioned, the 5DMKII forte is not sports. While I think its technological marvel at a fair price, the focus mechanism is a weak point that can make it challenging to shoot sporting events. I would dream up to a 1D for sports.

Some of your comments lead me to believe you might want throw some pocket wizards in your line up. Even strobes in strategic locations can make a huge impact.

Good luck!

I still don't completely understand. If an 85 is too long for your intended purpose, are you looking for a longer focal length just for taking shots from different locations on the floor?

Disagree. It make shooting portrait orientation much more stable/comfortable, with the added benefit of battery life. It's also a welcome addition for those of us who don't have tiny hands.

Again, disagree. that's too broad a statement -- if it's all low-light indoor stuff, sure -- 2.8L IS all day. Outdoors in good light? f/4L is fine, and much easier to carry around all day.
As you said a battery grip is a convenience. He is still going to have to swap cards, and a battery swap is just as easy; better to buy an essential piece on his list.

The 2.8L IS is the more versatile lens, albeit the prices are insane at the moment. If I was going to get the 2.8 version I woud look around for a MKI and get the IS. If he has the luxury of only using this purchase for outdoors/good light the 4.0 will be fine.
