There is no best free AV. Plus, a lot of people have already recommended you things in this thread. Make your decision.

Avira, MSE, AVG, etc

Malwarebytes is great. So is Avira. Evidently, so is the 2011 version of Norton.

It's likely just a popup ad that tried running a script on your PC, such as those that say "Your computer has x,000 viruses, scan now!" I wouldn't sweat it, just be sure to set to block it indefinitely and you'll be fine.

For those bashing on Norton, it is obvious that neither of you have tried the latest Norton releases. It's come a VERY long way and is no longer the resource hog it used to be and has scored #1 on nearly every AV review. I don't use it anymore as I now use Microsoft Security Essentials and love it, but Norton is certainly not second rate crap anymore.

I believe it was Avira, followed by Avast! (or MSE) - please correct me if I'm wrong there.

I use Avast!

My experience with Norton and McAfee are from 10 years ago, when they were the very first thing I uninstalled from a problematic machine. That is not so much the case these days, but the stigma remains.

the old norton used to be extremely terrible and hog a lot of resources, they have gotten much better. Sure they still might not be the best but none of them are perfect. I have norton internet security 2011 running right now and firefox 4 with 6 open tabs is using more of my system, by a lot actually. I would not pay for norton but i happen to get it free so i use it and i have never had any problems, though i also try and practice "safe" computing habits. If i did have an issue or suspected one i would run multiple scanners anyway because review after review has shown that different avs and malware scanners will pick up different stuff. As a point of reference my girlfriends computer is running avast + comodo firewall and norton consumes about 20% more than avast but when you add in comodo norton is about 30% less then both combined and you should look at them combined since norton is doing both jobs and even more than those 2 do together.

Perhaps "second rate crap" was a little exaggerated, I will admit. I would also agree that Symantec/Norton have come a long way in the last couple years. That changes nothing that I've said about the alternatives, though. And a single maximumpc.com article certainly doesn't prove anything.

Remember OP. A "Free" program will only offer a limited amount of features. I too have Comcast and my Norton has been very reliable. I have not had a single issue with any Malware or viruses.(Even though they are the same thing as Wikipedia say..LOL Wikipedia) People are going to flame. Thats all there is to it. If Norton has been doing its job why replace it? People say that Norton is Bloated. OK prove it. When's the last time those naysayers used Norton? Can they give an accurate readout on how much of your system Norton uses? I can't find it on my Processes list. Maybe I am looking for the wrong thing. All I know is that Norton Works. It was not always that way. Norton did have its issues and problems in the past. And yes I have used AVG(had to reformat HDD after visiting my Yahoomail), I have had Malwarebytes(had to reinstall windows because it removed a system32 file that was required for windows to run properly.) No program is perfect.

I'm stereotyping, how

I told him a few of the free AV's recommended in this thread. If he wants to pay for an anti virus he can get some great features. I wasn't one of the individuals in this thread that even mentioned the word "norton".
