Which HD 6990 for Eyefinity? - Page 2

Right now im running Eyefinity with my XFX 6990. It come's with everything to run 3 DVI monitors, Or 2 DVI and 1 HDMI.
When they say you need one display port monitor that includes mini display port as its the same tech just different looking cable.

For my 6870 I use 1 x mini active DP adapter to DVI and 2 x DVI cables.

for 6990 you'll use the mini active DP adapter in place of a standard diaplayport active adapter.

If you have any questions you can PM , I have done plenty of eyefinity setups.

Hope I was able to help,
Cheers

Hi guys! First post - semi-long-time-lurker. Im thinking of moving from a 5870 to a 6990 myself, as I want more power for my eyefinity setup. Same as OP here; Im a bit worried about the connections.

1. One can't use passive adaptors in a Eyefinity setup? Correct?

I also see that a lot of 6990 cards is only supplied with 1 active adaptor.

2. Has anyone completed a working Eyefinty setup with only the 'daptors from the box?

If you've been here awhile then you would know not to thread-steal

But to answer your questions here

1) No
2) Will produce the exact same image, think of it like going from HDMI to DVI. At 1920x1080 you can't see a difference.

and @OP because the HD6990 is a flag-ship card nearly every single brand should come with all the required ports. Just don't go for Force3D/Club3D or some other really bad-quality brand xD

MSI, XFX, Sapphire, Gigabyte, ASUS and HIS spring to mind

Thanks for replying anyway

A 6990 is on its way to me. As I understand it a "default" Eyefinity set-up goes like this:

1 DVI
2 Active Mini-DP to DVI
3 Mini-DP to HDMI

I'm planning on using my active adaptor-to-DVI instead of HDMI, as I don't need a HDMI cable then, like this:

1 DVI
2x Active Mini-DP to DVI

The Sapphire comes with a mini-DP to DP adaptor.

I have a XFX 6990, And im using

1 DVI on the card
2 Mini-DP to DVI, Or Mini-DP to HDMI
3 Active Mini-DP to DVI

You can use 2 dvi's, Then the rest need to be active

Eyefinity needs 1 DP, the other 2 can be DVI or HDMI it doesn't matter just so long as your card supports it. Most people go for 2xDVI and 1xDP(with adapter) because its easier to get DVI monitors than DP monitors. Any combination will work so long as one of the monitors is plugged somehow into the DP in of the graphics card.

AHA. That's why they supply a passive adaptor. I thought the new cards where like the old cards: A DP connection needs a active adaptor.

The new cards are the same, only new connectors.

Thank you very much, Thealex!
