Newcomer: Check my build/suggestions?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I'm a newcomer to this computer building business. I do know quite a bit about computers though so I'm fairly confident about this.

I've been browsing through newegg and this is what I have so far:

Case: NZXT M59 $59.99
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146058)

Mobo: Biostar A880G+ mATX $54.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138283)

PSU: Antec TruePower 650W $79.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021)

CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 645 Propus 3.1Ghz $109.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103885)

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw series 2x2GB DDR3 1600 $49.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277)

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200 rpm $59.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319)

DVD-ROM: Generic Sony (16.99)

GPU: Still searching. Would prefer AMD/ATI. But if there's a good price for performance from Nvidia, I'd be willing.

Total: $430.93

I'm on a budget of about $500-550 for just the tower. Already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I plan to dual boot Linux and Windows 7(already have a install disc). I'm not planning to overclock or anything major like that so no need for a major cooling solution. I also don't plan to Xfire or SLI any GPU's so no need for a regular ATX mobo.

I will be using this to do multitasking such as internet surfing/word processing plus some midlevel gaming. Nothing big or high-end like Crysis or Call of duty or Starcraft. Basically I want a good fast performing PC and the satisfaction of building it and the potential for upgrading.

Will all these parts be compatible? If you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

Looks good to me but the power supply seems a little overkill for that system.

Thanks, I kinda guessed that. I used the newegg Wattage calculator and it said I needed ~400W. I do plan to upgrade as time goes on so Id rather have room for that. Any suggestions though? Maybe a corsair Builder Series 500W?

Noob question(s): does the number of 12V rails matter? What exactly are they? The Antec one I listed has 4, but others I've seen have only one.

I think this power supply would be great for that rig.

Also here is a good starter GPU.

I think you should keep the power supply. When I built my first computer, I had a weaker power supply because I gave myself a small budget. I started upgrading and had to replace it.

I would definitely wait for the NZXT M59 to go on sale again before you buy it. It was ~$30-35AR with a Corsair 430W power supply. Hm...if that deal comes again, then you don't need the 650W I guess..

I would also wait for a pair of DDR3 ram to go on sale before purchasing. Corsair Vengeance were $20AR at one point last week.

I definitely will be keeping an eye out for sales. I'm not planning on building until later this summer, July at the earliest. I just wanted to get an idea of how everything would work together and a cost estimate. Maybe if I convince my parents, I'll be able to build earlier and not when I go back to school.

I've heard iffy things about Thermaltake both in newegg reviews and elsewhere on this forum so I'm hesitant.

Can anyone answer these questions: Does the number of 12V rails matter? What exactly are they? The Antec one I listed has 4, but others I've seen have only one.

I know a 925 + 6850 combo and looks like it fits into the budget. My recommendation goes like this:

Phenom II x4 925 + HD 6850 - $260
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2GB 1600Mhz RAM - Now $40 shipped
Biostar A880G+ - $55 (should be adequate for no OC)
NZXT M59 - $50, shipped (at these other sites)
Antec NEO ECO 620W - $65 after promo [see link], $45 AR

- $59 shipped
LITE-ON 24X DVD-RW - $23, shipped, after promo [see link] (I think the other DVD drive you wanted is out of stock)
$552 shipped!
$532 AR

Your build actually looks pretty good, here is my version (one I just did for another thread, but fits yours as well)

CPU: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition $130
CPU Cooler: XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 120mm $30
Mobo: Foxconn A88GM Deluxe $65
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $40 (on shell shocker - jump on these as they will work with whatever you choose)
GPU: XFX 6850 $155 after mir
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6402AAEX 640GB $60 (or the 1tb Samsung that XD recommended is a great buy - I actually just ordered one myself)
PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W $40 with promo EMCKFHD36, ends 5/2 after $20 mir
Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition $30 after promo code EMCKFHB37, ends 5/4 and $10 mir

$550 Shipped after $30 in rebates. (add an optical drive of your choice for another $20 and remove the CPU cooler as you stated you don't need it)
It's so little!

That's not bad actually if OP doesn't mind after rebate final price
I'm not a huge fan of that PSU choice though, it's actually an underrated unit. The Antec NEO ECO 620W, for just $5 more (both before/after MIR), would be the better choice.
Another good case for $35 (no MIR) is the
