Thanks for the info. So just to clear this up (I'm not a AMD guy)AMD will "rig " the processor to work on a existing board...like putting a Ford carburetor on a Chevy motor.

?? What ??

Anyway, AMD won't "rig" BD to work on AM3 at all, they're not supporting it. It's up to motherboard manufacturers.

I just read this article and lead me to believe this.

According to most sources, an AM3+ cpu will fit into and "work" on an AM3 socket.

However, AMD are not "supporting" AM3+ in AM3.

It's down to manufacturer support to produce bios's for AM3 boards to run Bulldozer, which whilst should work, remains to be seen to what level.

There's some people on here who will say it doesn't matter, it's only power saving features, but they have no idea what issues could arise, and what a lot of people on here are forgetting is that without official AMD support, those bios updates are going to be pot luck as to how they function with individual board models.

I've had this problem running an X6 on my mobo (which was on Asus's first list of compatible mobos). Whilst it works fine at stock, I can't overclock the fsb at all (well, 210Mhz), which means no ram overclock. luckilly it's a black edition, so it doesn't matter, had I bought a 1055T i'd now be looking at stock clocks on a board "with full X6 compatability".

In short, if you need a new mobo, or want a "guaranteed fully functioning overclcocking board", then buy an AM3+ mobo.

Anyone who says "CH4 will work perfect, i don't need turbocore" doesn't know yet, they could be right they could be wrong.

I don't want the power saving stuff since I will OC anyway

But the "As part of those different set of electrical specifications, AM3+ processors are designed to talk to voltage controllers over a different VID, that's 3.4 MHz VID, while AM3 socket can only handle 400 KHz VID. Even if AM3+ chips run on AM3, they might probably lack some power management features, because AM3 boards' controllers might not support them. AM3+ will also feature a more advanced load-line design that lets controllers monitor electrical loads of the CPU and keep voltages within a stable range, minimizing vDroop (lowering of vCore with higher than normal load (when overclocked, loaded), messes up OC stability). AMD's new load-line design increases efficiency by up to 11.8%.

AMD's new electrical specification, coupled with ASRock's implementation are claimed to reduce CPU power electrical noise by up to 22%. This has a direct impact on energy efficiency. Also, there's a reason those pins are thicker: the package is designed to handle 32% higher current than AM3, the AM3+ is designed to handle 145A, while AM3 was designed for 110A. "

I want that stuff, but my MB is only 5 months old, so oh well

I can't wait to see some OCed BD in a m4a89, hopefully ASUS has good power on this MB

You are right, but still it's not wise to buy an AM3+ board right now if you already have a good AM3 simply because we don't know how well that "BD on AM3" feature will work yet. If after BD comes out you see that it works just fine on AM3, keep your board. If not, buy a new one. But still, just wait for the release. It is as simple as that.

True that. So much freaking talk about BD, when it isn't out. I mean, obviously we all want some hype and speculation, but people talk and tell other people what to do and expect like they know.

When the damn thing comes out whenever, and we can all see fun little benchmarks on various platforms under various conditions, we'll be able say "ah-ha BD does that". Til then, let's at least preface by saying "I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I think..."

No argument here.

I just don't want Bulldozer to release, then a load of people put BD in an AM3 board, find it doesn't overclock as well as they expected then write a load of rubbish about BD being rubbish, I want to see benches and overclocks on the correct platform.

If it's rubbish on AM3+, fair enough!

Just give it a fair chance.
